About the role

The Nurse Manager oversees daily clinical operations, nursing personnel, and student patient care at Washington and Lee University's Lindley Center for Student Wellness. Reporting to the Director of Lindley Health, this full-time, 10-month, exempt-level, on-site position fosters a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment within Lindley Health and Lindley Counseling.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, mentors, and supports the day-to-day performance of full-time, part-time, and wage clinical staff, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and Medical Assistants (MAs).
  • Collaborates with leadership to establish monthly and daily clinical staffing schedules, adjusting them dynamically based on patient flow and clinical demand.
  • Manages recruitment, onboarding, and continuous professional development programs for nursing personnel.
  • Communicates performance expectations effectively, conducts timely evaluations, addresses employee concerns, and utilizes coaching to promote accountability and team engagement.
  • Opens the clinic daily, facilitates morning huddles, coordinates room assignments, and manages staff call-outs to ensure an orderly flow of patients.
  • Develops and implements programs addressing continuous quality improvement, peer reviews, charting audits, and overall clinical efficiency.
  • Evaluates, develops, and implements clinical unit policies, procedures, and medical protocols while ensuring strict compliance with state, federal, HIPAA, and FERPA guidelines.
  • Maintains advanced proficiency in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, serving as the primary resource for clinical documentation standards and staff EMR training.
  • Delivers hands-on ambulatory nursing care, applying advanced clinical skills to evaluate vital signs, perform therapeutic intervention, and triage patients.
  • Synthesizes information from patients' EMR files to determine care priorities and collaborates closely with the University Physician, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Dietitian, and Counselors to facilitate seamless multidisciplinary care.
  • Utilizes frequent application of crisis management skills when working with students at risk, displaying the maturity and empathy required to support a diverse student body.
  • Participates actively in leadership meetings and committees, serving as a representative to broader university-wide or Student Affairs initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program.
  • A BSN or a Bachelor's degree in a related field is strongly preferred.
  • License to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or a valid Multi-state Compact License) required at the time of hire.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS/CPR certification.
  • 3 years of progressively responsible clinical nursing experience.
  • Proficiency in adult/adolescent ambulatory care, phone triage, EMR systems, immunization tracking, and standard clinical procedures (e.g., phlebotomy, injections).
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; ability to maintain a professional, welcoming, and efficient atmosphere under fast-paced conditions.
  • Demonstrated lead, charge nurse, or supervisory experience involving staff scheduling, workflow coordination, and performance feedback is preferred.

The expected annual salary for this position is between $65,000 - $78,000 for a 10-month schedule. Offers are based on factors such as qualifications, relevant experience, skills, internal equity, and market and organizational considerations.
