Nurse Manager

This position has 24-hour accountability and is responsible for the delivery of high-quality and cost-effective health care while achieving positive clinical outcomes, patient/family and employee satisfaction. The Unit Manager oversees overall operations, integration, coordination, and direction of nursing and patient care for the assigned unit, ensuring care delivery aligns with the company’s mission, vision, values, and accepted standards of practice. Responsibilities include mentoring and educating nurses, collaborating with physicians and medical professionals, and serving as a resource to staff regarding service quality. This role may also provide direct patient care to maintain clinical skills and oversees the facility’s Infection Prevention program.

Responsibilities

  • Administrative:
    • Collaborates with the Director of Nursing to maintain adequate nursing coverage for 24/7 safe care.
    • Effectively utilizes staffing, limiting overtime and agency personnel.
    • Participates in staff recruitment, including interviewing and selection.
    • Assesses nursing staff performance and implements Individual Performance Improvement Plans as needed.
    • Conducts regular staff meetings and provides updates to the Director of Nursing.
    • Collaborates with other departments to ensure timely, effective care aligned with patient needs.
    • Promotes a culture of safety and participates in nursing committees and patient care meetings.
    • Submits budget requests and assumes administrative responsibilities for weekend/holiday coverage.
    • Works beyond scheduled shifts to meet state staffing requirements or patient needs.
  • Clinical Leadership:
    • Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates nursing care to achieve clinical and financial outcomes.
    • Provides professional guidance to non-professional staff and ensures patient care assignments align with staff competencies.
    • Ensures timely and accurate compliance with the MDS process and patient care plans.
    • Participates in interdisciplinary teams to develop and evaluate patient goals and minimize rehospitalizations.
    • Oversees Point Click Care (PCC) usage and ensures physician orders are followed.
    • Manages medication supplies and ensures adherence to company policy.
    • Communicates promptly with physicians, families, or responsible parties regarding patient condition changes.
    • Fosters a respectful, team-oriented environment responsive to staff, patient, and family concerns.
    • Ensures shift-to-shift communication and serves as a role model in direct patient care.
    • Provides patient care when required and oversees the discharge planning process.
    • Reports incidents, accidents, and adverse events promptly and investigates patient/family complaints.
  • Education:
    • Identifies staff educational needs and collaborates with the Nurse Practice Educator (NPE) to develop programs.
    • Evaluates program effectiveness and staff competency.
    • Demonstrates, teaches, and evaluates nursing skills for the unit’s patient population.
    • Promotes professional development and career opportunities for nursing staff.
  • Quality Improvement:
    • Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating quality improvement activities.
    • Prepares reports, reviews records, and collects data as needed.
    • Reviews clinical records of patients with unplanned rehospitalizations to identify improvement areas.
    • Ensures documentation, investigation, and reporting of incidents, adverse events, and grievances.
    • Maintains confidentiality of Protected Health Information (PHI).

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (RN or LPN).
    • Associate Degree in Nursing: 3 years of nursing experience.
    • Diploma: 3 years of nursing experience.
    • BSN: 2 years of nursing experience.
  • Minimum of one year of leadership experience (e.g., head nurse, supervisor).
  • Current licensure by the State Board of Examiners of Nurses.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English to ensure patient and visitor safety.
  • Must provide verification of TST (tuberculin skin test) as required by state law and company policy.
  • Infection prevention certification preferred.
