About the Role
At Houston Methodist, the Manager Nursing position is responsible for 24-hour comprehensive operational oversight of the delivery and quality of patient care in the designated area(s). This role fosters interdepartmental and interprofessional collaboration, participates in committees, and assists in developing performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. The position demonstrates leadership through self-direction, initiative, and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
The manager is responsible for daily work activities of the department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, and efficiency while supporting strategic and operational objectives. This includes staffing decisions, budget compliance, coaching, counseling, and policy implementation to maintain a safe and effective work environment. The role also ensures compliance with ethical, legal, and regulatory standards through training and monitoring initiatives.
Responsibilities
People
- Performs management responsibilities including selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of department employees.
- Provides development and mentoring to staff, aiming to meet or exceed department turnover goals.
- Conducts regular department meetings, rounds on employees, completes performance appraisals, and provides feedback and recognition.
- Facilitates effective team dynamics and teambuilding within and between departments.
- Meets or exceeds threshold goals for department and system metrics on employee engagement.
- Establishes two-way communication with staff, demonstrating active listening and supporting organizational goals.
- Coaches staff on communication, stress management, and teamwork.
Service
- Plans and organizes day-to-day department operations, schedules, and activities to ensure high customer/patient satisfaction.
- Drives department service standards to impact patient/customer-based satisfaction scores.
- Actively participates in entity committees and serves as a role model for staff.
- Resolves concerns, complaints, or conflicts with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
- Maintains ongoing interactions to improve patient care and service.
Quality/Safety
- Ensures a safe and effective working environment, monitoring and revising the department safety plan and infection control guidelines.
- Confirms staff maintain required credentials and competencies.
- Uses information systems to enhance operations and support performance improvement.
- Monitors and improves department workflow, reporting near misses and adverse events, and identifying solutions.
- Role models situational awareness and compliance with policies and procedures.
- Prepares measurable goals and objectives aligned with Houston Methodist priorities.
Finance
- Assists in developing and managing the department budget to ensure cost-effective operations.
- Manages department expenses within approved budget parameters.
- Develops staffing plans and schedules to meet patient care needs while optimizing productivity and minimizing overtime.
- Plans coverage to maximize management and staff presence.
Growth/Innovation
- Identifies and implements innovative solutions for workflow improvements.
- Supports change initiatives and adjusts to new work structures and processes.
- Proactively evaluates processes and recommends sustainable changes.
- Participates in developing and implementing new procedures and reviewing existing ones.
- Builds strategic relationships to achieve business goals.
- Identifies developmental needs for self and staff and takes appropriate action.
- Ensures career discussions and individual development plans (IDPs) are completed and updated.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing.
- Three years’ experience in nursing, with one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare. For internal candidates, two years’ experience in nursing with demonstrated leadership abilities (e.g., charge nurse responsibilities).
Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications
- Required:
- RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure (Texas Board of Nursing). Compact Licensure accepted; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
- BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
- Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification within one year of hire.
- Preferred:
- ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
- As required by department:
- NIHSTROKE - National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA).
- NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI).
Knowledge and Abilities
