Nurse Manager Requirements

  • Must always present as courteous and professional
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to perform multiple tasks
  • Excellent communication skills, including organizing ideas logically and clearly
  • Able to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others
  • TB screening required
  • Certification in HPAO-approved de-escalation training
  • Strong and effective verbal, written, and organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency in using HPAO's electronic medical records
  • Leadership and program development experience in an inpatient facility
  • Knowledge of major clinical therapeutic models and behavioral health best practices

Nurse Manager Duties & Responsibilities

  • Compliance with Federal Regulations, 42 CFR Part 2, Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Patients, and HIPAA Regulations
  • Compliance with DPH, DMH, Joint Commission, DEA, and other regulatory agencies
  • Knowledge of ASAM criteria
  • Monitoring patient needs related to filling practitioner orders, administering medications, monitoring vital signs, coordinating medical care, and managing withdrawal (COWS/CIWA)
  • Assist with discharge planning and care coordination activities
  • Provide brief crisis counseling, individualized risk management, and safety planning
  • Provide psychoeducation to both patients and staff related to medical/nursing areas of expertise
  • Ensure patient care meets best practice standards
  • Ensure compliance with all governing regulations and payor guidelines
  • Ensure compliance with HPAO policies and procedures
  • Participate in recruitment, hiring, promotion, training, and evaluation of nursing staff
  • Assist in developing nursing and medication records on each patient
  • Review and make recommendations regarding policies and procedures
  • Report to Infection Control Committee as needed
  • Assist in monitoring inventory, ordering of medications, and equipment needed for daily operations of the unit in collaboration with the pharmacy
  • Responsible for the fiscal management of the nursing budget for the unit
  • Participate in quality assurance and implementing quality improvement planning, including Tally Card, CQI, and/or failure mode projects
  • Review Incident Reports and Sentinel Events, as required
  • Provide supervision for nursing staff personnel
  • Participate in all required committee meetings
  • Responsible for the proper disposal of medications
  • Responsible for the scheduling of nurses to maintain adequate nursing staffing patterns to manage the day-to-day operation of the unit
  • Monitor both open and closed charts for correct and complete documentation
  • Assists in the development and monitoring of programming schedules
  • Attend monthly Nurse Managers meeting to maintain consistency in nursing practice
  • Attend mandatory training to update knowledge base and enhance both professional and personal growth
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing, Site Director, or COO to ensure safe and appropriate operation of the program

Nurse Manager Qualifications

  • Five to eight years of direct care experience within a behavioral health and/or substance use disorder treatment setting
  • Two years supervisory experience preferred
  • Current and unrestricted license in Massachusetts as a Registered Nurse
