About the Role

Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Administrator/Nurse Manager, this position observes, assesses, plans, intervenes, and evaluates outcomes, documenting all aspects of patient care. You will provide primary proactive management for the service area during your assigned shift, supervise and evaluate nursing staff, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure 24-hour continuity of care. The role includes assuming duties of the Nurse Coordinator during their absence and providing direct nursing care to patients as needed. Flexibility in work schedule is required, and duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.

Other duties include actively participating in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations. This position may also be eligible for additional pay for work performed during evenings, nights, and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Assess the health/mental status of patients upon admission, transfer, and on an ongoing basis, documenting all aspects of care.
• Perform CPR and Heimlich techniques safely according to American Heart Association standards.
• Provide direction and coordination of staffing and patient care activities on assigned units in collaboration with nurse administrators and staff nurses.
• Facilitate smooth admission and transfer processes, ensuring appropriate patient status and triage when needed.
• Carry out medical staff orders and implement nursing interventions according to hospital policies and procedures.
• Provide and document individual/group teaching to patients regarding medications, illness, and treatments.
• Implement special precautions, restraint/seclusion procedures, and monitor patient safety according to departmental policies.
• Participate in client abuse and neglect processes, ensuring patient safety and adherence to Treatment Intervention Protection Strategies (TIPS).
• Coordinate and administer effective utilization of nursing service personnel on assigned units.
• Attend mandatory trainings and participate in ongoing in-service education to meet the needs of patients.
• Serve as the nursing representative in Performance Improvement teams.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including disaster response or COOP activation.

Requirements

• Graduation from a Nursing Program accredited by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
• At least six (6) months of experience as a practicing registered nurse (RN).
• Experience in a health agency, hospital, or healthcare facility is preferred.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is preferred.
• Licensed to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Texas (or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact).
• If transporting patients, must possess a valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it within 90 days of hire.
• Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
• Males aged 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
• Must be at least 18 years of age (21 for Waco and Terrell Center for Youth applicants).
• Flexibility in work hours, including overtime and extended shifts, may be required.
• Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required.

Skills

• Knowledge of American Nurses Association Nursing Standards, departmental policies, and the Nurse Practice Act.
• Supervisory and management skills.
• Ability to perform CPR, aggression management, restraint techniques, and emergency care.
• Strong interpersonal skills for positive interaction with patients, staff, families, and the public.
• Ability to handle crisis situations calmly and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Pay

Salary Range: $6,579.41 - $7,761.50 per month.

Schedule

• Full-time, regular position.
• Shift: Regular Weekend Day (flexibility in work hours may be required).
• Not eligible for telework.
• Travel: Up to 10%.

Location: El Paso Psychiatric Center, 4615 Alameda Ave, El Paso, TX.
