About the role

The CRN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics in addition to the Clinical Research Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The CRN serves as a coordinator, clinical nurse, educator, consultant, and leader in clinical research. Applies experience and knowledge to execute complex research protocols within the clinical setting. Interacts daily with physicians, nurse practitioners, management, staff, patients, and families to promote clinical expertise, patient safety, resource utilization, and adherence to regulations for research.

Responsibilities

• Collect health data in a systematic and ongoing manner, prioritizing data collection as determined by the patient’s immediate condition or needs and involving the family.
• Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and utilize nursing diagnosis to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate patient plan of care that is family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, and culturally relevant.
• Practice critical thinking, analysis, and clinical judgment through use of the nursing process to address physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients and families.
• Collaborate with members of the multidisciplinary team to develop plans consistent with patient’s individual needs and goals.
• Coordinate clinical trial procedures utilizing evidence-based nursing practice and expertise to develop and coordinate a plan of care designed to meet the physical, psychosocial, and social needs of patients and their families.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the research process by synthesizing research protocols to provide principal investigator and sub-investigator with an understanding of the requirements of the studies.
• Monitor and report significant study events including adverse events, study amendments, and study closures.
• Assure proper documentation throughout research conducted to meet the Code of Federal Regulations and ICH Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP), federal, state, local, protocol, and institutional requirements to facilitate a high level of data integrity.
• Assist with recruitment and enrollment of patients to clinical trials; evaluate and assess a subject’s suitability for inclusion in studies.
• Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations.
• Monitor care and progress of patients, serving as a clinical liaison for any interdisciplinary or consulted care; monitor treatment of any side effects and the status of patients.
• Provide clinical direction, coordination, and execution of research projects including interaction with clinic departments, education of staff, provision of resources required, and collaboration in management of individual project budgets.
• Collaborate with staff within the institute and with outside organizations in the completion of clinical research trials.
• Integrate ethical principles in all aspects of practice.
• Enhance knowledge of culture and diversity needs for specific populations.
• Manage patient and/or family phone calls, collaborating with the physician or nurse practitioner as needed to obtain orders for patient management (telephone triage).
• Provide patient and family education and support.
• Participate in professional growth to maintain clinical practice that is evidence-based and consistent with nursing policies, procedures, and licensure requirements including professional scope and standards.
• Adhere to the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statement in all aspects of professional practice.
• Evaluate one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations of the system and department policies; maintain current knowledge in nursing practice.
• Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
• Collaborate with others in the practice of nursing professional development at the institutional, local, regional, and state levels.
• Interact with and contribute to the professional development of peers and other healthcare providers through positive role-modeling, fostering peer relationships, and participating in preceptor and/or mentor programs to create an environment for quality practice.
• Develop and evaluate standards of care for patients that are evidence-based.
• Identify changes that should be made in nursing practice using an evidence-based approach.
• Participate in and use evidence-based research to identify strategies for improving nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care by utilizing all resources effectively and efficiently.

Requirements

• Associate in Nursing required. Associate degree nurse must complete BSN within 60 months of hire date or have 5 years of Registered Nurse Experience (direct or indirect).
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• At least 10 months of clinical nursing experience required.
• Clinical research experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Registered Nurse (RN) license, state and/or compact state licensure upon hire required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required as appropriate for assigned unit upon hire.
• Competencies applicable to clinical setting (e.g., Chemo, stroke) required within 1 year.
