NURSE EXTERN - MED SURG 4AB

About the role

The Nurse Extern will work under the direction of the Registered Nurse Preceptor to provide patient care through an interdisciplinary approach.

Responsibilities

• Utilize the nursing process in the provision of care
• Communicate with all members of the health care team to ensure patient goals are being met and coordinated
• Provide excellent customer service while supporting the patients and families' physical and emotional health
• Assure necessary communication with the healthcare team to assist the patient in meeting their goals
• Perform nursing interventions and document according to policy and procedure ensuring patient safety
• Assist the RN preceptor in the practice of professional nursing by providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate the performance of diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan
• Perform assigned tasks including activities of daily living such as dietary and hygiene needs
• Ambulate, turn, and position patients as well as transport patients, answer call lights, and report observations to the patient's nurse
• Demonstrate professional behavior, strong customer service and communication skills when interacting with all individuals and groups, both internally and externally
• Assist the RN with indirect care by maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and/or control infections and to provide for the safety of patients, visitors, and employees
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an accredited Registered Nurse Program approved by the State Board of Nursing
• When enrolled in a BSN program: entering senior year and having completed at least the medical/surgical clinical component of his/her educational experience
• When enrolled in a Diploma/Associate program: entering final year of nursing school
• Presents proof of continued enrollment and passing grade(s) in nursing classes each semester until graduation and is in good academic standing

License, Certification & Clearances

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program required
• Act 33 with renewal
• Act 34 with renewal
• Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Incumbents will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.). Travel may be expected locally between Independence Health locations.
