About the role

The nurse extern position at FirstHealth of the Carolinas is designed for nursing students to gain practical experience across various nursing areas. This role is co-assigned with a Registered Nurse (RN), allowing the extern to perform both direct and indirect patient care under direct supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care by performing routine treatment procedures and assisting in maintaining a safe, clean environment.
  • Absolutelyserves the patient’s activities of daily living according to the needs of the patient in a timely manner, following departmental procedure.
  • Accurately observes, records, and reports to the RN all patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress in a timely manner.
  • Aids the RN with examinations and procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in basic and intermediate care skills as verified by nurse mentor, preceptor, nurse manager, and/or nurse director.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in those skills identified on the skills checklist that may be carried out independently.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in those skills identified on the skills checklist that may be carried out under direct supervision of an RN.
  • Participates in educating oneself effectively and assists in peer education.
  • Seeks educational opportunities to increase competence.
  • Maintains a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and/or control infections and ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Thoroughly cleans assigned patient care areas according to departmental procedure.
  • May act in the role of a sitter for a patient as assigned by the charge RN.
  • May have limited access to medication including during the transport of non-controlled substances at the request of a licensed care provider.
  • Performs rounds, handles patient requests, reports and records changes in condition or behavior of patients or unusual incidents, within the scope of training.
  • Assists and accompanies patients in the admission, transfer, and discharge process.
  • Ensures adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

Student must be in good standing of a nationally accredited nursing program in their final year of either an Associate or Bachelor's Degree program. The ability to work weekends, holidays, and shift rotations as needed is considered critical service during inclement weather and disasters. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Qualifications

Nursing students who are currently enrolled in a nationally accredited nursing program and are in their final year of either an Associate or Bachelor's Degree program are eligible for this position. Applicants should demonstrate strong academic performance and commitment to their nursing education.

Skills

Basic and intermediate care skills, knowledge of advanced skills inventory, ability to carry out skills independently or under direct supervision, effective communication and teaching abilities, and the ability to maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment.
