Nurse Extern I - Nursing Internship

About the role

Under the supervision and/or direction of the Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern I performs various direct patient care activities in accordance with the Nursing Department policies and procedures. The Nurse Extern I can assist with the care of hospitalized patients and may be assigned other functions in accordance with hospital/department policies, procedures, and protocols.

Responsibilities

• Identify and report life-threatening situations to the R.N.; initiate and assist with basic life support when needed.
• Observe and report unusual symptoms to the nurse, such as abnormal vital signs, IV site redness or edema, or suspicious areas of skin breakdown accurately and promptly.
• Report patient or family-related problems, including dissatisfaction, refusal of nursing care routines, or deviations from activity advancements/restrictions.
• Demonstrate a working knowledge of aseptic/sterile technique and follow universal precautions.
• Record information accurately and promptly; report changes in patient’s condition and/or vital signs.
• Assist with laboratory specimens, including collection or delivery.
• Comply with the timekeeping system; maintain no unexcused absences and no more than three unscheduled absences.
• Use supplies and equipment appropriately, document use in the medical record, and record charges accurately.
• Participate in 80% of prescribed in-service programs and departmental meetings; follow up on missed sessions (20% max) to obtain discussed information.
• Follow hospital and/or unit policy for dress and personal hygiene.
• Adhere to necessary safety precautions, hospital policies, and departmental policies.
• Attend infection control and safety programs.
• Follow hospital policies and/or departmental rules.
• Comply with CHRISTUS Health Guidelines related to HIPAA to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
• Complete all required educational requirements.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, pursuing or having obtained an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing (RN).
• If graduated, must successfully complete the NCLEX Exam within six (6) months of graduating.
• Must have completed the first clinical and be in good standing in the nursing program.
• Proficient in basic nursing tasks.
• Six (6) months of experience in a hospital preferred but not required.

Qualifications

• AHA BLS certification required within two (2) weeks of employment.
