We are a unique clinic that operates out of RVs and SUVs, partnering with community agencies to bring healthcare to those who need it most. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so we NEVER send bills to our patients. We focus on helping patients living with mental illness, homelessness, and substance use disorder. We travel to homeless shelters, transitional houses, inpatient treatment facilities, and more. We are also growing! This position is designed for nursing students who want to learn what it truly means to care for high-need and underserved populations. As a Nurse Extern, you will gain hands-on clinical experience alongside Nurse Practitioners, learning about substance use disorder treatment, harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and the social factors that affect a patient’s health, such as housing, insurance, and access to food. You will see how healthcare works outside the walls of a hospital, and you will leave with skills and experience that will move you forward into your next RN role. Because of our unique model, your role will resemble some traditional nursing support roles and some that are unique to the Recovery Mobile Clinic. You will learn the EMR system we use and Clinic Tracker, and you will assist Nurse Practitioners in patient care. Under the supervision of our licensed providers, and within the scope of your nursing education, you will perform clinical duties such as vital signs, phlebotomy, vaccine administration, IM injections, wound care, urine collection, and patient education. You will also learn front-office and care coordination duties such as checking insurance, entering vaccine data into MCIR, updating patient information, scheduling, and making patient calls, and you will learn how to help patients apply for Medicaid and SNAP benefits. You will also help manage our medical supply inventory, set up machines and testing equipment, clean instruments, maintain and wash our RVs and SUVs, and complete other station maintenance tasks. And you will be trained to drive an SUV and an RV! FUN! The ideal candidate is a nursing student who is passionate about community health and eager to learn. The Recovery Mobile Clinic has built its success on being a reliable and consistent medical clinic, so consistency and reliability are immensely important. Most importantly, the ideal candidate has an open and accepting personality and treats every patient we see with respect and compassion.
