Responsibilities

  • Oversees the development and implementation of the certification course budget, including capital equipment allocation for certification courses and simulation resources, and makes recommendations according to MSHS financial goals.
  • Maintains, reviews, and evaluates educational record-keeping and reporting systems for all certification programs, including TNCC, ATLS, and other trauma/emergency certifications, and modifies as necessary.
  • Conducts and participates in meetings.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and communication techniques necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Administration / Operations

  • Observes established MSHS mandatory educational requirements.
  • Reviews and formulates departmental and program objectives in accordance with corporate policies, strategies, and goals.
  • Participates in the management of external consulting services (e.g., schools of nursing, TNCC/ATLS course directors, professional experts).
  • Acts as a management representative for the MSHS or department on committees as designated.
  • Participates in the formulation of departmental policies and procedures based on evidence, best practices, and expert opinion, including policies governing certification course delivery and recertification timelines.
  • Acts as resource person for staff regarding Department of Nursing policies and procedures, including certification requirements.
  • Participates in the recruitment and retention of staff, including certified TNCC/ATLS instructors and course faculty.
  • Evaluates staff competencies and compliance with patient care and unit documentation requirements.

Education

  • Serves as the primary administrator and coordinator for TNCC, ATLS, and other designated trauma and certification courses, ensuring compliance with sponsoring organization standards (e.g., ENA, ACS, AHA).
  • Manages all logistics for certification course offerings, including scheduling, faculty coordination, course materials, equipment, and registration processes.
  • Maintains current TNCC Provider/Instructor status and, where applicable, ATLS coordinator status; partners with physician course directors for ATLS administration.
  • Ensures ongoing availability of certified instructors to meet health system-wide course delivery needs; recruits, develops, and mentors new TNCC and other course instructors.
  • Tracks and maintains records of staff certifications, provider cards, and recertification deadlines across the health system; communicates proactively with nursing leadership to address lapses.
  • Meets regulatory, licensure, and annual health assessment requirements.
  • Identifies learning strengths and needs of designated staff.
  • Identifies and designs programs that facilitate organizational development.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of educational activities at the level of the learner, the department, and the institution.
  • Selects appropriate instructional strategies for educational programs, including simulation, skills labs, and scenario-based learning relevant to trauma and emergency nursing.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements activities to achieve educational objectives.

  • Designs, develops, and organizes training manuals, references, web-based and multi-media instructional aids, and other educational materials.

  • Serves as a professional role model and preceptor for new staff and students.
  • Contributes to the profession of nursing through leadership and participation in professional organizations (e.g., Emergency Nurses Association, Society of Trauma Nurses).
