Nurse Clinician - Allergy Full-time Days

About the role

As a Nurse Clinician at Northwestern Medicine, you will work in a multidisciplinary environment, utilizing exceptional interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, clinical, and administrative units. This position requires the use of nursing skills to perform patient assessments via phone or in person and implement nursing interventions, demonstrating appropriate judgment, independent thinking, and creativity when resolving patient care issues. You will also initiate and organize patient education for the population served by the unit.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe and clean work environment, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations. Report and assist in rectifying deficiencies as requested.
• Assume responsibility for and supervision of the appropriate care of medical equipment.
• Provide pre-attending care for patients, performing comprehensive assessments of the chief complaint and patient needs using the nursing process.
• Based on assessment findings, seek solutions and offer opinions to physicians and other healthcare providers.
• Document all nursing assessments clearly, completely, and legibly in the patient’s medical record while maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Understand and uphold protocols and procedures for the release of patient/medical information.
• Perform routine nursing duties (e.g., phlebotomy, medication administration, vital signs measurement, lab specimen preparation) and demonstrate clinical competency in complex specialty-related procedures (e.g., conscious sedation, chemotherapy administration, wound care).
• Interpret abnormalities in tests and procedures, taking appropriate remedial action, and document all interventions in the patient’s medical record.
• Communicate and collaborate with other clinical and administrative departments to coordinate patient care, including communication with outside agencies or facilities.
• Triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls using clinical assessment skills and service standards, documenting all assessments in the patient’s medical record.
• Manage urgent/emergent medical situations in accordance with organizational protocols for medical emergencies and cardiac arrests, operating emergency equipment as needed.
• Serve as a resource for staff and physicians for daily problem-solving and decision-making, maintaining alertness to patient care needs and proactively addressing issues.
• Delegate appropriate tasks to Licensed Practical Nurses and Medical Assistants according to Illinois law and organizational protocols.
• Comply with all existing policies and procedures related to patient care, making recommendations for improvements to enhance the patient experience.
• Initiate and coordinate patient education, ensuring patients understand materials and can demonstrate comprehension when pertinent.
• Provide teaching to staff on both a formal and informal basis and participate in community outreach education, patient support groups, or specialty-related programs as requested.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
• State Licensed Registered Nurse for the state of employment.
• Certification in Basic CPR.
• 2 years of relevant clinical experience in an acute or ambulatory care environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (may be required for certain positions).
