About the Role
Registered Nurses in the Medical Surgical unit on 6 Main at UK Good Samaritan Hospital provide care to adults with a variety of medical-surgical needs, including diabetes, endocrine disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, wound care, and surgical cases (both pre- and post-operation). This environment supports collaborative efforts among nursing staff and the team of physicians to increase communication and enhance expected patient outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Provide total, comprehensive, continuous, and patient-centered care, including assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care.
- Deliver direct patient care and ensure patient satisfaction.
- Train and delegate duties for Nursing Care Technicians (Nursing Assistants).
- Adhere to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
- Utilize the nursing process in conjunction with a comprehensive patient-centered plan of care to ensure patient satisfaction.
Requirements
- Active Kentucky Registered Nurse (RN) license, Temporary Work Permit (TWP), Provisional License, or active compact state RN license in good standing.
- American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support certification for the Healthcare Provider, valid for at least 6 months after employment date.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- No prior experience required.
Skills & Knowledge
- Knowledge of Maslow’s eight Basic Human Needs and priority within Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns Framework, as well as Swanson’s Caring model.
- Superb direct patient care and critical thinking skills.
- Basic computer navigation skills and working knowledge of the internet.
- Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with patients, families, co-workers, and physicians.
- Strong organizational, prioritization, and delegation skills.
- Highly motivated, proactive, and confident in advocating for patients and their families.
- Exceptional technical skills and ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with at least 1 year of RN experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 50–100 pounds daily and 25–50 pounds frequently.
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for long periods of time.
- Potential exposure to communicable diseases, radiation hazards, and injury from intractable patients or sharp instruments.
Schedule
- Three 12-hour day shifts per week (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM).
- Required to work some weekends and holidays.
Pay
$28.00–$39.10/hour
