About the Role

The CRNA will employ multiple modalities, including regional anesthesia, MAC sedation and general anesthesia, in the operating room to provide adequate analgesia or anesthesia during surgical procedures. The CRNA scope of practice is defined by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the North Carolina Practice Act. Providers are accountable to the North Carolina Board of Nursing for practicing nursing within the scope of the North Carolina Nursing Practice Act. The CRNA will work with an exceptional team who support full scope nurse anesthesia practice.

Case Mix

Great mix of cases including general, orthopedics, urology, plastics, GYN, podiatry, dental, ENT, ophthalmology. Out of department procedures include endoscopy, cardioversions/TEE, and IR. There are no hearts or lungs. CRNAs function independently to provide labor epidurals on a designated labor and delivery tract.

Responsibilities

  • Performs pre-anesthetic evaluations on patients utilizing established guidelines and administers appropriate pre-operative medications. Consults with physicians as appropriate. Ensures that any patient/family questions or concerns are satisfactorily addressed.
  • Verifies patient identity and correct procedure(s). Checks for appropriate physical status for anesthesia/analgesia, following through as warranted.
  • Ensures that anesthesia machine, breathing circuits, monitoring equipment, suction devices and all other equipment that will be used is fully operational, in advance of scheduled time for procedure. Ensures availability of backup and emergency drugs on anesthesia cart, to include necessary equipment for their administration.
  • Appropriately establishes and secures intravenous/intra-arterial lines, applies appropriate monitors based on patient needs and procedural requirements.
  • Induces and maintains inhalation, intravenous, local, regional and topical anesthesia commensurate with commonly used anesthetics and techniques, constantly monitoring drug effects and altering dosage to maintain optimal physiological function consistent with patient well-being, safety and procedural goals.

Qualifications

  • Masters in nursing and certificate graduate of approved Nurse Anesthetist program.
  • Cert/Recert by the National Board of Certification & Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • RN license.
  • ACLS Certification.
  • PALS Certification.
  • BCLS certification.
