Nuclear Transportation Specialist 2

About the role

The position involves managing the safe, secure, and compliant transfer of up to Hazard Category 2 and 3 levels of nuclear and/or hazardous material throughout the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) site and off-site.

Responsibilities

• Follow procedures and transportation documents related to the nuclear and hazardous material packaging and transportation programs.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and transportation documents relating to the nuclear material transportation compliance program.

Requirements

• Demonstrated performance in accomplishing work safely, securely, being environmentally conscious with due regard for quality.
• Intermediate knowledge of federal, state, and local hazardous materials standards and regulations (i.e., 49 CFR DOT and FMCSR requirements).
• Intermediate knowledge and experience in hazardous materials and/or nuclear materials packaging and transportation.
• Able to work to procedures affecting nuclear and hazardous material transportation.
• Able to work under limited direction and as a team member under tight schedules.
• Good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions to problems.
• Working knowledge of load tie-down procedures.
• Promised ability to successfully establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and/or external customers.

Qualifications

• Relevant Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

• Knowledge of Laboratory organizational structure.
• Knowledge of nuclear material control and accountability program.
• Knowledge of Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy/practice/procedures.
• Cohesiveness with management, supervision, co-workers, and customers.
• Proven ability to successfully establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and/or external customers.

Training/Certifications

• Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with hazardous materials endorsement.
• Successfully complete the 49 CFR Hazardous Material Packaging and Transportation (HMPT) training and pass the On-the-Job (OJT) test requirements.

Work Environment

• General work environment: Outdoors, Indoors, At heights, At high or low atmospheric pressures, In widely ranging ambient temperatures (i.e. extreme cold, extreme hot), Working alone, Working overtime or irregular schedule, working off-shift/rotating schedule, Operation of specialized heavy equipment (e.g. Forklifts), Operation of commercial motor vehicles.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance

This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
