NUCLEAR MECHANIC SYSTEMS INSPECTOR (SHIPS)

About the role

You will serve as a NUCLEAR MECHANICAL SYSTEMS INSPECTOR (SHIPS) in the NUCLEAR INSPECTION DIVISION OF THE QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICE of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre-test, test inspections, certification and acceptance of completed work reviews on nuclear reactor plant, refueling, and overhaul work.
• Perform mechanical, piping, and structural inspections, pre-arrival and material condition assessment inspections.
• Ensure reactor grade cleanliness is maintained in accordance with local directives as required by NAVSEA specifications for reactor plant cleanliness.
• Perform weld joint in-process and acceptance inspections for nuclear welding and non-destructive tests (NDT).
• Identify and document deficiencies on nuclear deficiency reports.
• Maintain records of inspections performed, adhere to all safety regulations, and inspection results and corrective actions are taken in accordance with local directives.

Requirements

• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Must be able to travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.
• Must be able to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Must be able to lift and/or carry loads/items up to 40 pounds in weight.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

• Current nuclear training and qualifications are required at the full journeyman level.
• Must have the ability to interpret diagrams, specifications, drawing and interrelated procedures and technical requirements to most critical job applications.
• Knowledge of mechanical, piping and structural material.
• System-wide knowledge of the interrelated effects of work evolutions of nuclear reactor plant systems.
• Able to maintain records of work performed.
• Some knowledge of the following Inspection skills: Reactor Refueling Operations, Reactor Plant Certification prior to Critical Operations Testing, Reactor Grade Cleanliness Controls, Weld Joint in progress and acceptance inspections (Non-Destructive Test), Reactor Plant Systems, Material Accountability, and Receipt Inspection.

• Able to assemble, disassemble, install, test, maintain, repair, troubleshoot, calibrate for accuracy, modify and design.
