About the Role
The position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. The role may be filled as a field engineer, project engineer, or systems engineer based on candidate qualifications. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
The Plutonium Infrastructure Engineering Division (PIE-DO) at Los Alamos National Laboratory develops, maintains, and applies diverse engineering capabilities to provide innovative solutions in support of the Laboratory's Plutonium Facility. PIE-DO implements the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program, which includes processes, standards, training, and qualifications applicable throughout a facility's life cycle to manage risks and meet customer requirements safely, securely, cost-effectively, and in an environmentally responsible manner.
The selected candidate will support the Install team.
Responsibilities
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1
- Ensure technical aspects of construction and maintenance projects conform to Approved Project Documents by monitoring facility maintenance and construction activities.
- Provide input during scoping, design, execution, and project closeout to ensure baseline documents are accurate, design documents are adhered to, and as-built configurations are verified.
- Expedite project execution by identifying issues, coordinating technical solutions, and providing timely guidance to the constructor through approved procedures.
- Apply a basic understanding of field engineering principles throughout job execution.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2
In addition to the responsibilities outlined for the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1, the level 2 role requires:
- Demonstrated understanding and application of engineering principles on the job.
- Awareness of national and industry codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IBC, ASME).
- Expertise in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure completeness and constructability.
- Effective communication of engineering solutions verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.
- Proficiency in conducting field verification of construction work to enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes, and standards.
- Proficiency in collaborative problem-solving to resolve nuclear facility engineering issues as the liaison between design engineers and the constructor.
Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements
- Ability to support field execution with technical guidance for codes, standards, specifications, and design criteria.
- Experience managing technical requirements for construction, including coordinating designer-constructor interfaces, design changes, submittal reviews, inspection documentation, RFIs, field change requests (FCR), commissioning, and turnover processes.
- Aptitude for conducting field verifications of construction work to oversee, facilitate, and enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes, and standards.
- Ability to coordinate and manage externally executed design work, including administration and oversight of design contracts.
- Aptitude for collaborative problem-solving to resolve nuclear facility and infrastructure engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers and the constructor.
Additional Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2
- Demonstrated expertise in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated proficiency in conducting field verification of construction work and collaborative problem-solving.
Qualifications
Education/Experience at Lower Level (Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 2 years of practical work experience.
- Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
- Candidates meeting the degree requirement but lacking the 2-year experience may be considered for hire through an exception process.
Education/Experience at Higher Level (Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience.
- Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
- Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
Desired Qualifications
- Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT).
- Professional registration with a recognized state licensing board.
- Familiarity with DOE standards and Orders (e.g., DOE O 413.3b, DOE-STD-1189, DOE-STD-1066).
- Experience producing designs using AutoCAD tools.

Pay
- Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1: $96,600–$158,000
- Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2: $106,400–$176,000
Schedule
This position may require 24/7 coverage, involving a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay. Shift assignments are at the discretion of the manager based on facility needs.
- A Shift: Days, 4 x 10 hours (Mon–Thurs or Tues–Fri), 6:00 AM–4:30 PM
- C Shift: Days, 4 x 10 hours (Fri–Mon), 6:00 AM–4:30 PM

Work Location
The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees must serve a 1-year period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for other posted jobs.

- This position requires a Q clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
