About the role

This position is open for external candidates only to apply. The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO) and Waste Facilities (PFE-WF) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking an Architectural Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Design, maintain, and upgrade facility architectural and structural systems and components at nuclear waste processing, storage, and characterization facilities on the LANL campus.
  • Develop design details, structural analysis calculations, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, into new facility designs as well as modifications to existing facilities.
  • Provide input on architectural aspects of facility design and modifications, including emergency egress and space planning to ensure occupant safety and productivity.
  • Support the Laboratory's mission by renovating rooms, modifying buildings and structures, and developing new structures within and around the plutonium facility.
  • Evaluate the placement of specialized mechanical, electrical, and material processing equipment and specify its support and/or anchorage within the building.
  • Support Operations and Maintenance groups within the facility to ensure architectural, structural, and related building systems are performing as expected, and ensure physical systems, structures, and components, and the related documentation are in alignment with nuclear safety, building code, life safety code, and other requirements.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of new and existing non-reactor facility structural engineering systems and calculations.
  • Knowledge of computer-aided engineering tools such as 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM, specifically Autodesk Revit).
  • Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, and control methods.
  • Knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
  • Knowledge of basic architectural concepts of space planning, occupancy requirements, ergonomics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Architectural Engineering is preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
  • Desired qualifications include experience with safety-critical systems in regulated industries, operations and maintenance environment experience, facility modification and retrofit projects, structural analysis experience, working experience with Autodesk Revit or similar BIM software package, knowledge of Building Systems Design processes, familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures, and demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to structural design implementation.

Skills

  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or national, and Department of Energy codes and standards including IBC, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, and DOE-STD 1020.
  • Knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Knowledge of project and process engineering practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of and prior use of IBC, IEBC and NFPA 101.
