About the role

The Senior Education Counselor supports youth in regaining the ability to successfully re-enter the classroom setting, prepare for GED, high school diploma, or basic education needs. This role provides educational assistance to youth during their time in Non-Secure Detention.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the shift work plan by assigning tasks to other counselors and monitoring attendance/coordinating coverage.
  • Serve as a role model and lead counselor by orienting and training new staff; ensure incident reporting documentation is completed.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation pertaining to incident management.
  • Act as a liaison between the facility and on-call Director in emergency crisis situations to ensure safety of staff, youth, and facility security.
  • Ensure end-of-shift communication to promote continuity of care.
  • Provide daily support, supervision, and mentorship to youth in a non-secure detention setting.
  • Model positive behavior and conflict-resolution strategies.
  • Assist youth with developing life skills, emotional regulation, and accountability.
  • Ensure safety, structure, and consistency within the facility.
  • Collaborate with case managers, probation officers, educators, and mental health professionals to ensure youth’s well-being.
  • Perform daily food preparation.
  • Adhere to agency policies and procedures; support agency mission, vision, and values, including participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement.
  • Assist with daily general household tasks, including laundry.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or GED required, with at least 2 years of experience working with youth in juvenile detention centers, group homes, youth shelters, youth diversion programs, or comparable disciplines involving work with youth and families.
  • Alternatively, two years of college in a social or human service field (equivalent to 30 credits or more).
  • Successful completion of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification and First Aid/CPR training following hire as part of on-the-job training.
  • Training to administer medication under the direction of facility or designee.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with variable hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Ability to work with an economically and culturally diverse population.
