About the Role

Assists in the evaluation and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Performs physical examinations, specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and collaborates with physicians to diagnose medical problems, develop care plans, and prescribe treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Documents the delivery of care in individual medical records, including patient histories, psychosocial histories, health status, and medical or potential problems.
  • Conducts patient interviews and performs physical examinations.
  • Performs specialized procedures such as cast application and removal, wound suturing, and dressing changes.
  • Orders, schedules, and performs laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures (e.g., urinalyses, pregnancy and blood tests, x-rays).
  • Communicates procedure details, preparation, and anticipated effects to patients.
  • Arranges consultations or referrals to other medical professionals or community services in collaboration with a physician.
  • Educates patients on health habits, self-examinations, behavior management, follow-up care, at-home medical care, medication, and related health issues.
  • Works with management to formulate professional development plans and attends educational in-services.
  • Participates in professional activities and organizations to stay current with trends and developments.
  • Maintains and updates accurate patient records, including medical assessments, interventions, and evaluations.
  • Collects and interprets diagnostic data to implement appropriate care plans.
  • Prepares statistical reports and analyses of research projects and investigational protocols.
  • Trains and teaches other healthcare professionals, including students and residents, in specialized techniques and procedures.
  • Actively participates in organizational health services committees.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program or Physician Assistant program.
  • Current licensure as an advanced practice nurse in Georgia by the Georgia Board of Nursing and certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or equivalent body, or certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Licensed as appropriate in the state of Georgia.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Healthcare Provider certifications required; ACLS may be required in some areas.
  • May require at least one year of direct experience in one or more high-acuity clinical specialties.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting: 20–50 lbs occasionally (0–33% of the workday), 11–25 lbs frequently (34–66% of the workday), 1–10 lbs constantly (67–100% of the workday). Maximum lifting: 50 lbs.
  • Carrying objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Occasional to frequent standing and walking; occasional sitting.
  • Close eye work (e.g., computers, typing, reading, writing).
  • Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks.

Environmental Factors

Environmental conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Exposures may include, but are not limited to:

  • Blood-borne pathogens and bio-hazardous waste.
  • Chemicals, gases, fumes, and vapors.
  • Communicable diseases and electrical shock.
  • Floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, and indoor/outdoor conditions.
  • Latex exposure and potential patient care/handling injuries.
  • Radiation and shift work; travel may be required.
  • Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators.
