Nonprofit Accounting Manager

Responsibilities

  • Own and execute the month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Perform and review account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness across all balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Manage accounts payable and payroll administration, ensuring timely processing, accuracy, and compliance with internal policies.
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements, management reporting, and supporting schedules.
  • Complete grant and donor reporting, including preparation of financial reporting required by funders and stakeholders.
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls, accounting procedures, and financial policies to support compliance and financial integrity.
  • Cook up the annual audit process, serving as the primary point of contact for external auditors and preparing requested documentation.
  • Support preparation of Form 990 reporting and assist with other compliance-related filings.
  • Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to support financial planning and decision-making.
  • Monitor cash flow and cash management activities, including short-term forecasting and banking coordination.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to streamline accounting operations and reporting.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to support organizational initiatives and ensure financial accuracy across departments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with strong ownership of the full accounting cycle.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting practices and GAAP.
  • Experience with nonprofit, association, healthcare, education, or other mission-driven organizations preferred.
  • Familiarity with grant accounting and Form 990 preparation strongly preferred.
  • Must have experience in QuickBooks and advanced knowledge of Excel.
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate across departments.
