Non-Profit Controller

About the role

CFS is partnering with a respected nonprofit organization seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and finance function. This is an outstanding opportunity for a hands-on accounting leader with strong nonprofit expertise, proven team management experience, and a passion for supporting a mission-driven organization.

Responsibilities

• Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end close, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management
• Manage, mentor, and develop a large accounting and finance team, fostering accountability and professional growth
• Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant reporting requirements, and regulatory filings
• Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary liaison to external auditors
• Monitor internal controls and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning efforts
• Partner with executive leadership to provide financial analysis and strategic guidance
• Oversee restricted funds, grant accounting, and funding source compliance
• Ensure timely preparation and filing of all required federal, state, and nonprofit reporting requirements

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• MUST HAVE nonprofit accounting experience
• Experience managing and developing a large accounting team
• CPA strongly preferred
• 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance leadership experience
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
• Proven success overseeing audits, financial reporting, and compliance functions
• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
• Ability to balance strategic initiatives with hands-on execution

Pay

Up to $145,000 annually.
