Non-Licensed Substitute

About the Role

Substitutes assume responsibility for all aspects of the classroom, including student supervision, implementing employee-created lesson plans, and providing continuity for learning in the classroom.

Responsibilities

• Adheres to and administers curriculum provided by Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) or provided lesson plans created by the absent employee.
• Observes, follows, and understands LCPS policies, procedures, and expectations.
• Provides direction and supervision to students at all times, ensuring their safety and educational goals are a priority during the assignment.
• Is flexible to teach various subjects at different grade levels and remains confident, comfortable, and professional while providing appropriate classroom management.
• Works and builds positive relationships with students, staff, administrators, and the community to create a positive student environment.
• Provides feedback to the absent employee at the conclusion of each assignment, including lessons covered, incidents, and student questions.
• Site-based substitutes are assigned to a single location, report daily, and fill short-term substitute assignments across content areas and classrooms.
• Long-term substitute teachers (assignments exceeding 10 consecutive days) may include lesson planning, developing and grading assessments, delivering instruction, and communicating with parents, staff, and administrators.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 18 years.
• High school diploma or passed a high school equivalency examination approved by the VDOE Board of Education.

Qualifications

• Experience as a lead teacher/instructor/professor of adults or children preferred.
• Experience teaching or training adults or children in non-classroom public school environments (e.g., scout leader, classroom/school volunteer, preschool instructor, coach, store or restaurant manager, trainer) is preferred.

Skills

• Knowledge of effective classroom management strategies is preferred.
• Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents in English.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly talking, expressing, or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, including conveying detailed or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply practices and policies.
• Frequently sitting and/or remaining stationary for long periods.
• Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.

Pay

• Daily Substitute Rate: $19.29/hour or $135.03/day (7-hour day).
• Daily Loyalty Substitute Rate (25+ assignments): $21.43/hour or $150.01/day (7-hour day).
• Site-Based Substitute Rate: $22.00/hour or $154.00/day (7-hour day).
• Long-Term Substitute Rate: $28.57/hour or $200.00/day (7-hour day).
