About the Role

The NF Commercial Manager oversees all aspects of purchasing and inventory management of nonferrous metals to support a specific region or designated geographical area. This role collaborates with Regional Accounts Managers, the Recycling Operations Director, General Managers, and Buyers to ensure alignment with regional monthly forecasts or the Buy Plan set by the Commercial Operations Director.

The NF Commercial Manager works closely with Buyers, Regional Accounts Managers, and the National Centralized Nonferrous Sales Team on pricing strategies, inventory turns, quality control, packaging, shipping, and processing techniques. The goal is to ensure the region remains competitive, achieves desired inventory turns, and leads in the nonferrous and alloys marketplace. The incumbent focuses on growing the business by expanding material sources and engaging the current supplier base.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
  • Communicate and reinforce MRB’s scrap acceptance policies in line with Environmental, Health, and Safety regulations.
  • Recommend improvements for safety and environmental conditions.
  • Encourage reporting of safety violations and provide a safe environment for employees, customers, and visitors.
  • Collaborate with the Commercial Director and Regional Director to establish purchasing forecasts (Buy Plan) for the region, including expected metal margins.
  • Meet forecast goals and report variances to Regional Management and the Centralized NF Sales Team.
  • Serve as the liaison between national centralized sales operations and local efforts, communicating daily with the NF Sales team, Commercial Manager, and Director of Commercial Operations regarding commodity pricing and market conditions.
  • Provide daily buying prices and market updates to MRB NF facilities, including pricing guidance through conference calls.
  • Conduct weekly visits to NF yards to monitor purchases, processing, shipments, and identify opportunities for upgrades, quality improvements, and grading techniques.
  • Identify and buy a wide variety of nonferrous metals and alloys, assisting in regional growth and contributing to the monthly forecast.
  • Manage the Order Position for the region using scale systems and spreadsheets, tracking open sales and notifying the sales force of time-sensitive information.
  • Provide leadership in yard sales processing, prioritizing deals, and ensuring material is sold, packaged, and shipped according to specifications and credit rules.
  • Review supplier accounts and purchased material for profitability, positioning Radius to maximize metal margins without sacrificing inbound material.
  • Ensure adherence to Schnitzer’s published specifications for received material by buying and plant inspection personnel.
  • Analyze local and regional competition, including pricing structures and supplier bases, to inform the execution of the monthly Buy Plan.
  • Interact with General Managers and operational personnel regarding inbound material that may affect plant operations.
  • Review the NF position report, daily production transfers, and inventory position to maximize spot purchases for fulfilling orders or sales.
  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Regional Director or Commercial Operations, including assisting the National Centralized Sales Team with buying guidelines, cataloging, and time/weight analysis.
  • Monitor and maintain exempt and hourly staff at cost-effective levels.
  • Ensure compliance with HR policies and union contracts for supervisory practices.
  • Review performance of direct reports and interview prospective management or production employees.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to prepare job descriptions.
  • Support the company’s Internal Control process, including compliance with defined internal controls and suggesting modifications to policies and procedures.
  • Communicate operational problems, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or policy violations to management.
  • Ensure completion of internal control checklists for the scope of this position and direct reports.

Qualifications

  • Seven to 10 years of experience in the scrap metal recycling industry.
  • Hands-on experience at the yard level, with the ability to properly identify and grade all nonferrous metals, ideally as a metals recycling buyer.
  • Valid driver’s license for the state of employment.
  • Local candidates with knowledge of the regional market preferred.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
  • Excellent supervisory and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to interact professionally at all levels.
  • Excellent mathematical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic typing and 10-key skills.
  • Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagrammatic form and deal with problems involving multiple variables.

Work Environment

  • Primarily an office environment with occasional exposure to dirt and dust in a scrap yard setting.
  • Work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring adaptability to workflow disturbances or irregular schedules.
  • Regional travel is required for meetings with customers and visits to other Schnitzer locations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods (6-8 hours per day).
  • Ability to write by hand and use a keyboard for extended periods (6-8 hours per day).
  • Ability to perform tasks such as assembling papers, hole punching, stapling, and filing.
  • Sufficient visual acuity for close detail work, including preparing and analyzing data, inspecting scrap metal, accounting, and computer use.
  • Communication primarily conducted via phone, email, and in-person interactions.

Pay

Salary Range: $130,000 to $138,000 Annually
