Non-Credit Adjunct Instructor - Carpentry

About the role

The Non-Credit Adjunct Instructor - Carpentry position at Virginia Peninsula Community College is designed for individuals with extensive work experience as carpenters and/or in the construction field. The role involves teaching and supporting non-credit learners in various settings, including classrooms, laboratories, and field sites.

Responsibilities

• Teach carpentry-related courses, providing instruction, assessment, and mentorship to non-credit learners.
• Assess learner performance and progress, offering appropriate feedback.
• Plan and organize instruction to maximize student learning.
• Manage a class of up to 12 learners, including both live work and theoretical sessions.
• Adapt to state and local requirements, promoting higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Maintain accurate educational records and adhere to established educational quality standards.
• Operate a state vehicle as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Extensive work experience as a carpenter or in the construction field.
• NCCER Carpentry Certification (preferred).
• Prior teaching or training experience in a workplace or community/technical college setting (preferred).

Qualifications

• Knowledge of building materials and fasteners.
• Knowledge of construction plans and documents.
• Knowledge of carpentry tools and applications, including tool and job safety.
• Knowledge of floor, wall, and roof systems.
• Knowledge of building envelope systems, including windows, doors, and siding.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
• Good computer skills, including proficiency in using Email (Outlook), Microsoft Word, and Excel.
