About the role

The City of Aventura is accepting applications for a full-time Non-Certified Police Trainee to fill current openings and establish an eligibility list for future openings. Non-Certified Police Trainees must successfully complete the Police Academy and the State of Florida Police exam. Upon successful completion, employees will be promoted to the Certified Police Officer position.

Police Officers perform patrol duties, preliminary investigations, traffic regulation and enforcement, criminal law enforcement, and arrests for felony and misdemeanor offenses. Assignments may include Road Patrol, Detective Bureau, Traffic Unit, Training Unit, Street Crimes Unit, Marine Patrol, and other specialized units.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol streets, parks, commercial, and residential areas to detect and respond to crime, traffic violations, and other incidents requiring police action.
  • Write reports, field interrogation cards, and other documentation as required by incidents or cases.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations of crimes, crashes, and other law violations.
  • Respond to routine, emergency, or difficult calls for service; initiate calls for service when necessary.
  • Interview and interrogate suspects, witnesses, and drivers involved in crimes or crashes.
  • Gather and preserve physical evidence.
  • Make arrests or take persons into custody in accordance with federal, state, county, and city laws and ordinances.
  • Prepare cases for court and testify in legal proceedings.
  • Summon paramedics, tow trucks, other law enforcement officers, and additional assistance as needed.
  • Take measurements and draw diagrams of scenes such as crashes or crime scenes.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations as time, policy, and manpower permit.
  • Resolve conflicts and defuse tense situations when possible.
  • Prepare various reports, including reports of investigation, field interrogation reports, property receipts, alcohol influence reports, bad check forms, vehicle impoundment forms, offense incident reports, and accident reports.
  • Maintain availability via radio, laptop, or telephone for dispatch to emergencies or calls for service.
  • Demonstrate competence with firearms, less-than-lethal devices, and defensive tactics; carry required equipment at all times while on duty.
  • Coordinate activities with other officers, city departments, and external law enforcement agencies; consult with the City Attorney and Prosecutor’s Office as needed.

Peripheral Duties

  • Maintain departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities; report damaged or missing equipment to supervisors.
  • Maintain contact with the public, court officials, and other city officials in the performance of police duties.
  • Serve as a member of various employee committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or necessary.

Requirements

  • Must successfully complete the Police Academy and State of Florida Police exam.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation, medical exam, and drug screen.
  • Must pass a physical agility test within the last 6 months prior to application, administered by a certified FDLE training center.
  • Must successfully complete a swim test administered by a certified FDLE training center (waived for lateral candidates who have passed a swim test at least once in their career).
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with no record of DUI, suspension, or revocation in any state.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Good physical condition.
  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealing with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in reading and writing English.
  • Ability to use mobile or hand-held radio and related communication equipment.
  • Good moral character with no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions for perjury or false statements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 60 completed college credits in general studies, or a high school diploma/GED and 2 or more years of U.S. military service with an Honorable Discharge.
  • Applicants residing in Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, or Palm Beach counties must pass a full physical agility test and swim test prior to application (modified agility test not accepted).
  • Applicants residing outside these counties must pass a full physical agility test and swim test as part of the second phase of their background investigation.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment (if already a certified officer).
  • Ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
  • Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors.
  • Sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn the City’s geography.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures associated with risks and hazards inherent to the job.

Special Requirements

  • Successful completion of FDLE or CJSTC requirements, including the Police Academy, FBAT, and other required tests.
  • The FBAT is required for all applicants prior to submitting their application, except for military veterans (honorably discharged) or applicants holding an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.

Required Documentation

  • Transcripts reflecting a minimum of 60 college credits (general studies) or a high school diploma/GED and proof of 2 years of U.S. military service with Honorable Discharge.
  • Physical agility test results (administered by a certified FDLE training center).
  • FBAT results (unless exempt as a veteran or degree holder).
  • Swim test results (unless exempt as a lateral candidate).
  • Out-of-state applicants must submit a written acknowledgment of requirements for physical agility and swim tests to be completed at a later date.
