About the Role

MercyOne Waterloo Cancer Center has been the area's only comprehensive, accredited and multidisciplinary cancer treatment center in the 10-county area surrounding Black Hawk County for more than 25 years. As Iowa's first stand-alone facility to combine both radiation and chemotherapy treatment, and offer full support services in one convenient location, the center has stood as a promise of hope for those with cancer.

We are looking to hire a Clinic RN in our MercyOne Waterloo Cancer Care Clinic. As a Non-Bedside RN at MercyOne, you will use theory-based practice, utilizing critical thinking to assess, plan, implement and evaluate outcome based care for Oncology and Hematology patients. The RN facilitates communication with physicians, patient and family, other departments and/or team members.

Schedule

  • Full time 40 hours a week
  • 8:00a – 4:30p
  • No weekends
  • No Holidays

Responsibilities

  • Conducts an initial and ongoing assessment to gather and analyze data
  • Completes initial assessment in accordance with policy
  • Completes ongoing assessments based on patient's individual needs and/or unit specific time frames
  • Identifies patient short and long-term goals and develops them into an outcome based plan of care
  • Analyzes data collected from other health team members and assessment to develop an outcome-based plan of care
  • Implements an outcome based plan of care
  • Coordinates plan of care with other services (Social Workers, Dietary, Spiritual Care, Case Managers, Counselors etc.)
  • Prioritizes work, taking into account the needs of patients, own department and other departments
  • Collaborates with other health team members to assess appropriateness of level of care and utilization of resources
  • Coordinates care with a team approach
  • Implements plan of care including procedures, treatments, physicians orders, nursing orders, education plan and medications
  • Demonstrates clinical competency:
    • Initiates and manages IV therapy
    • Prepares chemotherapy and administers medication utilizing the five rights
    • Manages patient pain in accordance with policy
    • Monitors and provides skin and wound care
    • Monitors fluid and electrolytes and intervenes appropriately
  • Evaluates patient response to treatments and modifies the outcome based plan
  • Evaluates patient response to interventions and progress towards planned outcomes
  • Identifies changes in patient condition
  • Modifies plan of care based on ongoing assessments
  • Communicates relevant clinical information to optimize patient outcomes
  • Reports patient status and pertinent information to physician and other health team members
  • Documents completely and legibly
  • Receives and notes physician orders
  • Educates patient and family to meet identified needs
  • Assesses patient/family learning needs, barriers to learning and learning readiness
  • Develops an educational plan to meet identified needs
  • Implements educational plan including procedures, treatments, physician orders and medications
  • Evaluates patient and family response to educational interventions
  • Modifies educational plan based on ongoing assessment
  • Documents patient and family teaching in accordance with policy

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Associates required; BSN preferred
  • Current Iowa RN license
  • BLS
  • Mandatory Reporter
  • Oncology Certified Nurse achieved within 18 months of hire
  • Minimum of 1 year clinic experience is preferred
  • High language, intermediate math, high reasoning ability
