About the Role

The Hospitalist at Methodist Healthcare is responsible for providing and managing direct inpatient care, implementing the objectives of the Methodist Hospitalist Group, and overseeing patient care supervision, teaching, and learning activities. Responsibilities

• Provides and manages direct inpatient care, including history and physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnosis, treatment, and procedures consistent with core privileges.
• Orders, performs, and interprets examinations, tests, and records to diagnose patient conditions.
• Coordinates work with nurses, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, and other healthcare team members.
• Provides leadership and training in education to graduate medical and other approved educational programs.
• Functions as the Hospital’s attending physician for Educational Programs.
• Ensures timely and accurate completion of medical and billing records.
• Participates in the hospital’s utilization management, risk management, and performance improvement programs.
• Supports Methodist Information Technology and Electronic Health Record meaningful use through active participation, feedback, and collaboration.
• Participates in planning curriculum and learning activities with Site Directors in Medical Education.
• Plans faculty educational activities at Methodist Hospitals with Site Directors and other educators.
• Serves as counsel to Site Directors on Medical Education and Research matters.
• Facilitates interaction between Methodist faculty and UT faculty and serves as a liaison between Methodist learners, nursing, and clinics with resident education.
• Engages in patient care and administrative activities that support the educational program.

Requirements

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree required.
• Medical license in Tennessee (required); Mississippi, Arkansas, or additional certifications (preferred).
• Board certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (required) or American Osteopathic Association (preferred).

Skills

• Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for delivering medical care.
• Proficiency in current principles, methods, and procedures for medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
• Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and students.
• Ability to observe, assess, and document symptoms, reactions, and progress.
• Experience with electronic health records, including Methodist One Chart and CPOE.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, families, students, residents, and healthcare teams.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Ability to analyze clinical and research data.
• Strong organizational skills to coordinate multiple tasks and projects.

Supervision

This position supervises residents, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and students from multiple disciplines.

Physical Demands

• Physical activities may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
• Medium work: exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
• Close visual acuity required for assessing patients, preparing data, transcribing, and extensive reading.
• Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
• Exposure to patient body fluids and hazardous materials.
• Ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
