Night Shift Welder

About the Role

Whirlwind Steel, a leading metal building manufacturer, is seeking a skilled structural welder to join our team. This role is crucial in ensuring the quality and precision of our metal structures through expert welding techniques.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret shop details to determine specific welding requirements.
• Adjust the welding unit to obtain specified amperage and voltage according to Whirlwind Standard.
• Manually guide the electrode or gun along the weld line, maintaining proper arc length and speed to achieve the desired depth of fusion and bead.
• Perform welding in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions using FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding).
• Visually examine welds for bead size and other specifications.
• Identify finished parts using the Qualified Welder’s Identification number.
• Back gouge flanges and connection plates to ensure Complete Joint Penetration Welds that pass in-house Ultrasonic tests.
• Ensure welds pass visual inspection tests in accordance with AWS D1.1 welding code.
• Adhere to safety protocols, report safety issues, and maintain a safe working environment.
• Collaborate with team members, supervisors, and quality control personnel to resolve issues and ensure smooth production.
• Maximize productivity, minimize downtime, and meet or exceed daily production goals.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current welding certification.
• Minimum 2 years of welding experience.
• Experience operating an overhead crane.
• Ability to accurately read and interpret welding detail drawings.
• Proficiency in applying welds that pass visual tests and Complete Joint Penetration welds that pass Ultrasonic tests in accordance with AWS D1.1.
• Familiarity with welding equipment and tools.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work.
• Knowledge of safety procedures and willingness to follow them rigorously.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to stand, bend, twist, and reach for extended periods.
• Ability to work in a noisy environment and wear PPE as required.
