About the Role

The custodian works with a diverse team, ensuring that the campus is cleaned and ready for the next school day. This position contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to the community. The role requires effective communication via phone, email, and written messages, flexibility, forward-thinking, and the ability to manage deadlines. A willingness to seek the latest educational practices and implement them, along with relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals, is expected. The ability to work independently is a must, as the job often involves working when few other people are on campus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility, including:
    • Sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax, and polish floors
    • Vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops, and other areas
    • Spot clean and shampoo carpets
    • Dust, wash, and polish furniture and woodwork
  • Clean classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, lounges, offices, locker rooms, hallways, and other facilities as assigned
  • Maintain lunch areas and areas around play equipment
  • Maintain and tumble locks and lockers, empty waste receptacles, recycle bottles and other materials
  • Spot mop spills; remove gum, debris, and graffiti as needed
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities, including sinks, toilets, and urinals
  • Fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper, and other items
  • Wash mirrors, tile, walls, windows, and window coverings; unclog drains and toilets
  • Pick up paper and other debris from school grounds, walkways, and areas adjacent to school facilities
  • Sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to the school building
  • Perform emergency cleanup services resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling, and illness; assist in reporting and preventing vandalism
  • Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, and other equipment as assigned
  • Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean whiteboards, trays, and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs, and floors
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment
  • Prepare classrooms, gymnasiums, and other facilities for special events or meetings; set up and assemble chairs, tables, and other furniture and equipment; clean up following special events
  • Lock and unlock doors, gates, and windows as appropriate; turn lights on and off as needed; maintain security of assigned areas
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards to appropriate personnel; report the need for maintenance and repairs
  • Assist in receiving, assembling, and distributing supplies and equipment
  • Respond to daily emergencies such as clean-ups, set-ups, loading, and unloading supplies
  • Train and provide guidance to new personnel
  • Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods
  • Perform any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by your supervisor

Requirements

  • Availability for hours 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM
  • Willingness to learn
  • Ability to safely operate power tools and equipment
  • Experience with gas and electric maintenance vehicles (e.g., golf carts)
  • General knowledge of care for storing cleaning items
  • Ability to work independently and on a flexible schedule, including nights
  • Ability to perform strenuous tasks and lift 75 lbs
  • Ability to lift, move, and use ladders, lifts, and other related equipment
  • High school degree required
  • Experience preferred
  • Current driver’s license
  • Receive Safe Environment Training and sign the Code of Conduct
  • AZ Fingerprint clearance completed (prior to start date)

Qualifications

  • Preference given to a practicing Catholic, but faithful persons of other faiths are welcome (administrative jobs must be practicing Catholic)
  • Must be willing to make a public Profession of Faith if Catholic; if non-Catholic, willing to support Catholic teachings and philosophy

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, or hear
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • Must be able to stand for periods of time outside in heat and cold
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • Position will require some evening and weekend hours

Schedule

Twelve-month, full-time, hourly non-exempt position. A schedule of mandatory days and extra responsibilities is provided prior to the start of a new school year.
