About the Role
Responsible for performing assignments relating to the care of patients, as delegated by the Staff Nurse.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct care to patients based on policy, practice, and as supervised.
- Assist with activities such as changing bandages and patient grooming and hygiene.
- Clean and care for bedside equipment, general environment, occupied and unoccupied beds, bedside tables, dressers, clothing, and personal belongings.
- Assist the nurse in maintaining continued observation of and patient needs, including answering lights promptly, transporting patients, and assisting with assigned activities.
- Monitor patient activities throughout the shift by visiting each patient at least every 2 hours, making specific observations.
- Report to the nurse any deviations from usual/unusual behavior, clinical status, and/or any special needs on behalf of the patient.
- Take vital signs, including blood pressures. Record, document, and report results.
- Check daily on the general health and physical appearance of the patient and report findings to the nurse.
- Assist with keeping facility activity areas orderly and in a safe condition.
- Maintain a clean work area, such as utility rooms, treatment rooms, and pantry.
- Take interest in patient’s involvement with activities.
- Assist with admission and discharge activities.
- Account for linen and help keep the Linen Room neat and orderly. Report when unit supplies need to be replenished.
- Perform other assigned tasks as necessary.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Completion of orientation for care of persons with AIDS.
- No prior experience needed.
- New York State Certification as a Nursing Attendant, required.
Skills
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Practice safety rules at all times to prevent accidents, such as applying bed rails and keeping rooms in order.
- Attend ongoing educational programs to include at least 6 hours of in-service education every 6 months.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
- Required to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
