NGM - Open Pit Geotechnical Engineer
About the Role
Nevada Gold Mines is building an internal geotechnical design team to develop designs for our open pits and waste rock storage facilities. We are looking for Open Pit Geotechnical Engineers to join this team. The successful candidate will assist in developing and guiding projects within the Nevada Gold Mines portfolio at all stages of development, from scoping level to active mining through closure.

Responsibilities
- Data collection and assessment of rock mass and rock fabric properties, including logging of drill holes and excavations
- Interpretation of laboratory and field testing of soil and rock materials, rock mass anisotropy, and effects on slope performance
- Develop standard operating procedures for geotechnical logging, analyses, and design
- Geotechnical engineering analyses using Rocscience suite of surface stability software programs, Maptek IRC tool, LeapFrog, Deswik, Vulcan, etc.
- Perform slope design compliance
- Develop geotechnical slope designs at the bench, inter-ramp, and overall slope scales
- Preparation of technical memos and/or reports
- Strong written and oral communication skills with various personnel levels
- Collaborate with site geotechnical engineering and planning teams to coordinate field activities, schedule projects, and develop slope design criteria
- Mentoring staff on geotechnical engineering principles and techniques
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Geological Engineering or related field (required)
- Minimum of 3 years hands-on geotechnical experience at an active open pit mine site (required)
- Hands-on experience with data collection and assessment of rock mass and rock fabric properties (required)
- Strong understanding of soil and rock properties, anisotropy, and effects on slope design (required)
- Understanding of soils and rock deformability properties and characteristics (preferred)
- Understanding and experience with open pit blasting techniques and controls (preferred)
- Strong understanding of slope design workflows at the bench to overall slope scales (preferred)
- Strong competence in Rocscience suite of surface stability software programs, Maptek IRC tool, LeapFrog (required)
- Competent in use of Deswik and/or Maptek Vulcan (preferred)
- Understanding of 3-D geologic model inputs and development, and impacts on slope stability and design (required)
- Experience with bench scale and inter-ramp scale slope design compliance (required)
- Experience with Python programming (highly regarded)
- Demonstrated ability for developing and sustaining short-term and long-term projects (preferred)
- Must be able to work in a team environment (required)
- Supervisory experience of engineers and technicians (preferred)

About The Team
