NF Recovery Manager

About the Role

The NF Recovery Manager (NFRM) reports directly to the Plant Manager and oversees the collection, processing, and treatment of Auto Shredder Residue (ASR) prior to shipment to landfills. The NFRM communicates with the Maintenance Manager regarding all repair and maintenance issues, oversees nonferrous (NF) metal recovery and fluff stockpiling processes in compliance with state regulatory requirements, and assigns daily duties for pickers/cleaners. This position assists various managers and teams in optimizing physical plant operations while maintaining a safe work environment and training employees on safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S):
  • Ensures safe work practices and equipment use, aligning with corporate safety policies, OSHA, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Creates Health & Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with Regional Safety Engineer(s).
  • Ensures timely safety and operational training for department employees, maintaining signed acknowledgement forms and employee files.
  • Assigns an employee to the Safety Committee and attends meetings on rotation.
  • Monitors and improves the safety program to reduce accident frequency.
  • Understands and monitors the regulatory environment affecting the department and the company’s relationship with regulatory agencies.
• Operational Performance & Best Management Practices:
  • Provides leadership to JP department staff across multiple shifts, assigning work schedules to optimize production with minimal overtime.
  • Stays updated on technological innovations in NF metal and plastic separation.
• Equipment & Maintenance:
  • Oversees JP plant operations to ensure proper equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Purchases chemicals, fly ash, cement pumps, and parts to maintain plant functionality.
  • Schedules major projects, including manpower, equipment, downtime, and timelines.
• Inventory & Quality Control:
  • Ensures processing and storage of finished goods comply with internal controls.
  • Reports off-grade or off-spec materials to supervisors to avoid quality complaints, downgrades, or claims.
  • Participates in the Joint Products Operations Committee and supports other operational groups as needed.
• Budgeting & Forecasting:
  • Prepares and monitors daily production reports to improve throughput, reduce costs, increase profitability, and maximize metal recovery.
• Administrative Management:
  • Monitors exempt and hourly staffing levels to ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • Ensures compliance with HR policies and union contracts for supervisory practices.
  • Reviews performance of direct reports and interviews prospective employees.
  • Collaborates with HR to prepare job descriptions.
• Internal Control Responsibilities:
  • Supports the company’s internal control process, including compliance and suggesting improvements to policies and procedures.
  • Communicates operational problems, policy violations, or illegal actions upward.
• Supervisory Responsibility:

  Directly supervises employees across up to 3 shifts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 5-10 years of manufacturing work experience, with 2-5 years of managerial experience.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of manufacturing processes; maintenance background preferred.
• Prior experience managing and leading a work crew.
• Experience in a unionized environment is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive an automobile.
• Ability to quickly learn and understand ASR treatment systems, including shredder discharge, treatment plant components, and equipment operation (e.g., chemical treatment pumps, Induction Sorting System (ISS), eddy current separators (ECS), PLC controls).
• Professional oral and written communication skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Proven track record of researching and implementing new production systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Analytical skills to manage production metrics and implement new technologies.
• Experience managing a departmental budget, justifying capital expenditures, and measuring return on investment.
• Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagrammatic form and handle problems involving multiple variables.
• Spanish-speaking skills are helpful but not required.

Work Environment

• Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards, including walking/climbing in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces.
• Outdoor environment with occasional exposure to inclement weather, dust, and dirt associated with scrap yard conditions.
• Cyclical and reactive workload with substantial work pressure during peak times; irregular work schedules and disturbances are expected.
• Regular overtime required, including weekends, weekdays, and holidays.
• Occasional travel to other Radius locations may be required.

Physical Requirements

• Able to sit, stand, or walk for up to 12 hours per day.
• Bend, crouch, climb, balance, push/pull, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds.
• Hand and finger dexterity to grasp tools and equipment parts for repairs.
• Visual acuity for close inspection of documents, schematics, and equipment parts.
• Ability to negotiate over and around uneven surfaces.

Pay

$140,000 - $160,000/year
