About the role
The Inspector position at Sims Metal is crucial for maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring compliance with company specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe work environment and adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
- Examine incoming customer materials to identify and classify ferrous and non-ferrous commodities.
- Determine the appropriate commodity grade and purchase classification for materials received.
- Inspect materials to ensure compliance with company specifications, quality standards, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
- Verify that materials meet shipping and processing standards.
- Use computer systems and kiosks to accurately process and record material purchases.
- Mark materials as approved or rejected based on inspection results and document findings as required.
- Maintain accurate inspection and purchasing records.
- Provide excellent customer service when interacting with suppliers and customers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is required.
- One to three months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English is required.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus but are not required.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to work with electronic purchasing systems are required.
- Ability to identify and distinguish different grades of scrap metal is preferred.
Physical Demands
- Regularly stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Use hands to handle, grasp, feel, and manipulate objects.
- Reach with hands and arms.
- Talk, hear, and communicate effectively.
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and maintain balance.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
Work Environment
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, moving mechanical equipment, and industrial environments typical of a scrap metal recycling facility.
- Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times as required by company policy.
