“Networking” is the fourth instalment of a 4-part series aimed at newcomers to Canada working in Financial Crime roles. The series was designed and launched through Seneca College’s Financial Crimes Prevention and Mitigation program to address both the “Canadian Experience” and certification hurdles faced by newcomers.

About the Financial Crime Sector in Toronto

The Financial Crime sector in Toronto (and other Canadian cities) is a very close-knit environment. Given the proximity of many financial institutions within a small area, there are ample opportunities to build a professional network with other professionals at various financial institutions.

• Many after-hours networking events are hosted by major industry associations, smaller organizations, and key individuals in the field.
• The condensed nature of the profession in Toronto means you will quickly get to know the “key players.”
• Many venues are located in the downtown core, offering easy access via public transit and proximity to major employers.

As discussed in the “Contracting vs Permanent roles” instalment, many vacancies are filled by internal contractors or pre-identified candidates. Networking events are regularly attended by key hiring managers, providing the perfect opportunity to connect with them directly. Effective networking can position you as a strong candidate when the next vacancy opens, potentially bypassing the internal candidate pipeline.
