New commission, University of Manchester: 50 Jewish Objects artist 2019
About the role
The University of Manchester’s Centre for Jewish Studies is seeking an artist for a two-month project as part of a major new public engagement initiative. The selected artist will create Manchester-based artwork and public encounters in response to one or more of the historical and unique Jewish artefacts and manuscripts held at the John Rylands Library.
The artist will liaise with a post-doctoral researcher to select an artefact or manuscript and learn about the chosen object in depth. The project aims to produce works of creative engagement that respond to the historical, cultural, linguistic, or artefactual research currently being undertaken by scholars, while also appealing to general audiences through artist-led workshops.
The artefacts and manuscripts reflect the material culture of Jews across diverse historical and cultural settings. Artists of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with creative responses and interpretations welcome in visual, plastic, musical, or digital media.
