Neurosurgery Spine Service APP (Full Time)

About the role

We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join a dynamic Neurosurgery Spine Service supporting a multisite practice in Stamford, Trumbull, and Greenwich. This role offers the opportunity to provide comprehensive patient care in both the ambulatory clinic and operating room, working collaboratively with an experienced neurosurgical team dedicated to exceptional spine care.

• Multisite practice covering Stamford, Trumbull, and Greenwich
• Combination of ambulatory clinic and OR responsibilities
• 4-day work week with 10-hour shifts

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team in inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient settings.
• Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews/orders diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, formulates and manages patient treatment plans.
• Performs procedures, prescribes treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines, within specialty or professional competency standards.
• May function as first or second assistant on operative cases, using fine motor skills and manual dexterity (within scope and job educational prerequisites).
• Responds to emergency situations within YNHHS parameters.

Patient Education & Psychosocial Support

• Educates patients/families on care, treatment plans, side effects of treatments/medications, and discharge plans in collaboration with the supervising/collaborating physician.
• Provides psychosocial support to patients, family members, and significant others as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Information Management

• Ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements.
• Protects information (computer-based, paper, film, voice, or other media) from unauthorized access, modification, destruction, or disclosure.

Quality Management

• Demonstrates high standards of moral and ethical behavior, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care.
• Ensures compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.

Professional Development

• Engages in projects to maintain and advance professional competency.
• Serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and provides service-specific orientation.
• Demonstrates high reliability organizational behaviors, including reporting safety events and near misses.
• Maintains all employee requirements determined by hospital policy.
• May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other healthcare professionals, and as a mentor to pre-PA/NP candidates.
• Collaborates on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects, and assists with protocol formation.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
• Eligible for Connecticut licensure and certification.
• New graduates are welcome to apply.
• Prior APP experience in neurosurgery, spine surgery, orthopedics, or other surgical specialties preferred.

Qualifications

Education

• Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.

Experience

• Clinical working experience as an NP/PA in the specialty/service line is preferred but not required.

Licensure

• Active PA Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Connecticut State Registered Nurse License and Nurse Practitioner License.
• Board specialty certification, as appropriate for position profile.
• ACLS/BLS Certified, when indicated for position profile.
• DEA License.
• Additional licensure, certifications, and/or continuing education credits may be required based on position and specialty (e.g., PALS for pediatric positions, NRP for neonatal care).

APRNs, PAs, CRNAs, and CNMs must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS hospital and go through the Medical Staff credentialing process, including providing evidence of current competence and obtaining appropriate reference letters.
