Neurology Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Full Time Days

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The facility includes the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services such as women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. It operates a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center and a Primary Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health, with 24/7 neurologist availability. Additional outpatient sites include a wound care center, hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

About the Role

We are seeking a full-time Neurology Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Medical Staff Services team. In this role, the successful candidate will provide quality, professional, and cost-effective healthcare as a licensed independent practitioner (LIP) collaborating with licensed physicians. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) deliver a broad range of medical services within their scope of training and skills, as outlined in the collaborative agreement with the physician. NPs may provide care across the hospital, assist in surgery, and work on the Trauma Team, ensuring high-quality patient care, timely discharge, and adherence to evidence-based practices and standards of care.

Responsibilities

• Introduce/identify self as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
• Assist physicians with patient management, focusing on quality care and timely discharge.
• Communicate professionally with physicians, consulting physicians, case managers, nurses, and other hospital staff regarding patient information that may affect discharge or hospital course.
• Perform initial and ongoing patient assessments, including history and physical examinations.
• Assess and reassess patient conditions and care plans.
• Order and interpret tests (lab, radiology, EKG, etc.) based on patient needs.
• Order medications and treatments.
• Document care in patient charts in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, including the Clinical Documentation Initiative (CDI).
• Formulate diagnoses and implement patient care and treatment plans.
• Discuss patient care plans, expectations, and needs with physicians, nurses, case managers, and other hospital staff.
• Use established Long Island Health Network (LIHN) guidelines where applicable.
• Obtain consents for blood/blood product transfusions, CAT scan and MRI contrast administration, and procedures performed by the NP/PA.
• Initiate consults with physicians and other hospital staff, including hospice and palliative care.
• Initiate and participate in care related to end-of-life issues, including DNR/DNI and MOLST documentation.
• Manage medical/surgical patient care, including emergencies requiring BLS/ACLS/PALS (if adult or family NP).
• Perform trauma assessments/reassessments following ATLS (Trauma Team).
• Perform peri- and intraoperative assessments/reassessments.
• Perform peri- and intraprocedure assessments/reassessments.
• Round with physicians and other hospital staff.
• Order, apply, reapply, and remove restraints.
• Document all pertinent patient information in charts or computers following departmental and hospital policies.
• Write legibly, date, time, and sign all chart entries.
• Use name stamp where applicable.
• Document patient or family education.
• Document results of tests ordered or disposition of care.
• Complete all procedure notes.
• Document communication with physicians.
• Sign, date, and time verbal/telephone orders by the end of each shift.
• Complete and submit billing forms by the end of each shift.
• Complete discharge documentation, including discharge/transfer summaries, instructions, orders, prescriptions, and other required documentation.

Technical Procedures

• Explain procedures to patients and families.
• Use sterile technique, including barrier precautions, when needed.
• Perform procedures such as IV insertion, Foley catheter insertion, naso/orogastric tube insertion, and central venous line removal.
• Suture and provide wound care.
• Apply splints.
• Assist in surgery and with cardiac catheterizations.
• Perform CAT scan/MRI injections and other radiological injections, such as nuclear studies.
• Perform invasive procedures such as PICC insertion, central venous line insertion, and chest tube insertion.
• Perform surgical procedures such as chest tube removal and drain removal.
• Assist radiologists with procedures such as biopsies, drainage procedures, and special procedures.
• Perform radiological procedures such as paracentesis and thoracentesis.

• Attend a minimum of 50% of departmental, Medical Staff, and Trauma Team meetings.
• Participate in performance assessment and improvement studies.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an NP educational program approved by the State of New York.
• Current NP certification from either the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
• Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
• Current New York State license as a registered nurse and NP.
• Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) through the American Heart Association or Neonatal Resuscitation certification (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics, based on selected privileges.
• Neurology training and experience.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $138,176.08 - $169,616.08 annually. Actual salaries depend on factors such as experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. This range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
