About the role
Network Technicians at Alaska Communications are responsible for the installation, operation, administration, and maintenance of Digital and VoIP Telephone Switches, Transport Systems (both network and CPE), DLC’s, PBX’s, Ethernet Switches, Cell Sites, Central Office power systems, and the network management platforms used to monitor their performance and availability.
Responsibilities
- PBX Technician
- Provide customer service, troubleshooting, and educate customers on available ACS products and services.
- Provision and de-provision products and services; answer customer inquiries.
- Determine cable distribution to fulfill service requirements; run, secure, and terminate necessary cabling.
- Place equipment cabinets, racks, or supporting framework; accomplish all inter-cabinet wiring.
- Install associated sets and subsets of business systems, power equipment, and necessary distribution.
- Install and provision system programming.
- Perform fault location of PBX, PAX, Key, VoIP telephone, or special circuits to restore service.
- Conduct system or subsystem testing for failures or routine maintenance; perform preventative maintenance and database backups.
- Install, maintain, and modify PBX and Key Systems; install and configure vendor-specific cards and equipment.
- Central Office Technician
- Identify, research, and resolve software and switch issues daily.
- Use interface devices and test equipment to monitor digital central offices and associated facilities.
- Respond to system messages and alarms to determine root causes of network problems and take corrective action.
- Analyze switch performance, system faults, and customer reports; initiate corrective actions.
- Perform routine testing on-site and remotely, coordinating with other departments, customers, and telco personnel.
- Maintain technical documentation, office records, drawings, archived printouts, and site logs.
- Interpret and input complex software translation changes for system upgrades.
- Perform preventative maintenance and database backups.
- Install, configure, and provision Remote and Central Office equipment; troubleshoot, repair, and maintain Central Office equipment and wiring.
- Data Technician
- Perform installation, maintenance, and testing on private line and special circuit equipment, digital access cross-connect systems, T-carrier, fiber optic terminal, and multiplexer equipment.
- Install, align, and maintain line treatment equipment for data and analog circuits.
- Install and maintain WAN/LAN Ethernet switches, routers, servers, and VTC equipment at central offices and customer premises.
- Perform line conditioning testing and end-to-end tests for data transport equipment from the Central Office to customer premises.
- Coordinate installation activities with customers, departments, and manufacturers.
- Make cross-connect changes and rearrangements on MDFs, digital cross-connect panels, and fiber distribution frames.
- Interpret engineering specifications, schematics, and drawings for network and CPE installations.
- Customer and Network Support Technician (CNST)
- Monitor the network and resolve customer service trouble issues; verify resolution with customers.
- Receive trouble tickets/reports from Tier I teams, customers, wireless roaming partners, and other sources.
- Manage customer trouble reports from receipt to resolution; use systems and tools to isolate and resolve or escalate issues.
- Operate the Alaskan Network Operation Center; resolve Tier II support escalations for ACS products and services (Wireline, Wireless, Enterprise, Internet, Long Distance).
- Support Network Management Systems, including OSS/BSS equipment and databases; perform configuration management of network equipment and support servers.
- Install, troubleshoot, and problem-solve systems, desktops, and equipment used in the NOC.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Four (4) years of training in a relevant telephone apprentice program or equivalent experience leading to journeyman-level performance, with two (2) years of experience in the skills this position performs.
- Vendor-specific training and/or certifications (normally required and maintained).
- Ability to travel by air, land, and sea to deliver service to customers in remote areas of Alaska.
Qualifications
- External applicants must pass a pre-employment suitability assessment and either a DOT or non-DOT drug test, depending on the position.
- Network Technicians outside of Anchorage may be required to perform Field Technician duties, which may require a Medical Certification or CDL.
Pay
$45.31 - $51.03 per hour.
