About the role

The Wake County Information Technology Department is seeking an experienced Network Services Engineer to provide advanced technical support and leadership for the county's enterprise network infrastructure and its connected partner agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the performance of network hardware, software and data circuits, ensuring all network components are running on current firmware and/or IOS/COS release levels
  • Act as a project lead or team member for assigned tasks and projects
  • Develop strategies, technical direction and engineering solutions for enterprise-wide network services to meet key business needs
  • Aid other IT staff with network-related issues and provide second-level support to the helpdesk for areas managed or supported by the Network Team

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or a related field
  • Two years of experience in network design and administration
  • Six years of experience in network design and administration may be substituted for the combined education and experience requirements
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in network infrastructure management
  • Deploy, configure and maintain LAN/WAN routing, switching, firewalls and wireless systems (Cisco preferred)
  • Experience with DNS, DHCP, EIGRP, BGP and QOS
  • Network Monitoring using tools like packet capture platforms, SolarWinds, PRTG, Cacti, Viavi Observer/Apex or Cisco Catalyst Center (DNA) (preferred)
  • Security & Compliance Support firewall policies, VPNs, Intrusion Protection, segmentation, security hardening (NAC) (Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) preferred)
  • Documentation of network diagrams, inventories and change logs
  • Wireless Infrastructure IEEE 802.11 standards, Cellular networks, including LTE, 4G, and 5G (preferred)

  • Ability to identify issues, obtain relevant information, relate and compare data and identify alternative solutions
  • Knowledge of and ability to use effective approaches for choosing a course of action, developing appropriate solutions and reaching sound conclusions
  • Ability to take appropriate action based on available facts, constraints and anticipated consequences
  • Ability to oversee and coordinate projects and related activities, ensuring quality assurance, safety compliance, effective resource management and achievement of project objectives
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage project tasks, timelines, facilities, equipment, supplies and other resources to support successful project implementation
  • Ability to monitor environmental risks, maintain quality control standards and ensure project activities are effectively executed to achieve intended outcomes
  • Ability to understand customer technologies, resolve issues effectively and communicate clearly with internal and external customers
  • Ability to listen to symptom descriptions, analyze problems, respond effectively and provide constructive feedback to clients on issue resolution

Pay

Hiring Range: $77,676 - $139,818

Market Range: $77,676.00 - $139,818.00
