Network Engineer I/II (Contract ' Project Based)
About the role
This Contract Network Engineer I/II position provides onsite and remote technical support for customer networking projects throughout the United States. Designed for project-based engagements, it is compensated on an hourly basis for actual hours worked. Assignments may range from a few days to several weeks depending on customer requirements. The role combines entry-level and intermediate networking responsibilities and is ideal for professionals who enjoy hands-on technical work, travel, and flexible project assignments.
This is not a full-time salaried position and does not guarantee a minimum number of hours. Work opportunities are offered based on project needs and customer demand.
Responsibilities
- Network Deployment & Installation
- Install, rack, stack, cable, and label network equipment at customer locations.
- Deploy and configure switches, routers, wireless access points, firewalls, and related infrastructure.
- Perform network hardware replacements, upgrades, and refresh projects.
- Assist with site surveys and network readiness assessments.
- Validate connectivity and perform post-installation testing.
- Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot Layer 1-3 networking issues.
- Diagnose connectivity problems involving LAN, WAN, wireless, VPN, and VoIP environments.
- Escalate complex technical issues to senior engineers when necessary.
- Support customer cutovers, migrations, and implementation activities.
- Assist with network documentation and change management activities.
- Project Execution
- Execute project tasks according to scope, schedule, and customer requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, travel activities, and project documentation.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings and deployment planning sessions.
- Communicate project status, risks, and technical findings to project managers and engineering teams.
- Follow established customer and company procedures.
- Customer Engagement
- Represent the organization professionally while onsite.
- Provide excellent customer service and maintain positive relationships with client stakeholders.
- Deliver clear technical updates to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support multiple customer environments and technologies.
- AI-Enabled Expectations
- Utilize approved AI-assisted tools to improve documentation, troubleshooting efficiency, and project reporting.
- Leverage automation and scripting where appropriate to improve deployment consistency.
- Maintain awareness of emerging networking technologies and industry best practices.
Requirements
- Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate Degree in Information Technology, Networking, or related discipline preferred.
- Experience
- 2-5 years of networking or technical support experience.
- Experience supporting enterprise network infrastructure.
- Experience with customer-facing technical support or field services.
- Experience participating in network implementation or deployment projects.
- Technical Skills
- Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VLANs.
- Knowledge of routing and switching fundamentals.
- Familiarity with Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, Meraki, Ubiquiti, or similar networking platforms.
- Basic understanding of wireless technologies and network security concepts.
- Ability to read network diagrams and follow implementation plans.
- Experience using network troubleshooting tools and utilities.
- Travel Requirements
- Up to 100% travel depending on project assignments.
- Ability to travel throughout the United States, often on short notice.
- Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, or maintenance windows as project requirements dictate.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel by air and vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).
- CompTIA Network+.
- Aruba, Fortinet, Meraki, or Juniper certifications.
- Experience with firewall deployments.
- Experience with wireless surveys and wireless deployments.
- Experience supporting VoIP and Unified Communications environments.
- Experience working in healthcare, education, government, or enterprise environments.
Pay
Hourly compensation for actual hours worked on approved project assignments.
Schedule
- Project durations may vary from single-day assignments to multi-week engagements.
- No guarantee of minimum weekly or monthly hours.
Employment Classification
Contract / 1099 or W2 Contract (based on engagement structure).
