AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.
The AWS GCNA (Global Connectivity and Network Availability) Organization is looking for a Network Development Engineer to join our EDGE team. Network Development Engineers partner with our broader Infrastructure organization on configurations standards and tools, and collaborate with Systems and Software Engineers to ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products, and also deploy and sustain networking software tools.
AWS GCNA is the backbone that connects the global AWS network, focused on controlling the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications regardless of where they are in the world. GCNA is responsible for building and designing a complex backbone network that allows internet traffic to flow efficiently between data centers and customers.
Key job responsibilities
- Perform high quality network and/or systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best practices application, optimization, internal/external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation
- Design network designs, services and deployment procedures that solve for many requirements
- Create and defend High Level Design (HLD) and Low Level Design (LLD) documents
- Work with internal stakeholders to influence technology roadmaps
- Construct and test solutions, and provide support to the teams that will deploy and operate these designs
- Create and automate deployment processes that increases quality and velocity
- Work closely with our internal customers on designs/solutions; bringing those designs/solutions from concept to production
- Evolve routing policy, implement traffic engineering solutions, grow peering footprint, secure the "front door" from bad actors on the Internet, and architect the hardware platforms and network design to support any Amazon product that needs to reach end-users worldwide
- Develop automation, write software, and work with a wide range of partner teams to continually improve and automate our Internet connectivity in areas such as capacity delivery, configuration deployment, impairment detection, and traffic optimization
- Make decisions on both a day-to-day and long-term strategic basis which carry a large amount of responsibility and impact across all of Amazon's products
- Work in a 24x7 team on call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs
- Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure
- Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail
- Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed

Basic qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or above in computer science or equivalent
- 8+ years of IP networking fundamentals and extensive experience in the application of IP protocols as well as network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills
- 8+ years of experience with major internet routing protocols; specifically, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, RSVP and ISIS in a large enterprise environment
- 8+ years working with major network operating systems such as Cisco IOS and/or Junos
- 3+ years experience with Unix/Linux skills and the ability to script in Python, Perl, shell
Preferred qualifications
- A Masters in Computer Science, MBA, or equivalent experience
- Senior or Lead Engineer experience at other organizations
- Expert-level certifications (e.g. CCIE, JNCIE) a plus
- Expert-level scripting and/or automation skills in a network environment
- Software development/programming skills are a plus
Pay & benefits
Base salary range: $159,100 - $215,300 USD annually (USA, WA, Seattle). Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
