NEPA Project Manager - Environmental Services (Multiple Locations)

Burns & McDonnell’s Midwest Region is seeking a Project Manager for our Environmental Services Global Practice. The role encompasses environmental studies, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis, permitting, siting, routing, project management, client development, and other environmental services.

About the role

This position provides the opportunity to challenge and grow professionally within one of the industry’s leading firms. The candidate will lead tasks for small and large-scale routing/siting, NEPA, and related projects, including proposal development, cost estimation, project execution, budget management, client satisfaction, and staff mentoring. The role serves a variety of industries, including transportation, water/wastewater, renewable energy, electrical utility, oil, gas, and chemical.

Responsibilities

• Project management, team leadership, and mentoring of junior staff.
• Preparing routing and siting studies, NEPA documentation, and Federal/state documentation for environmental projects.
• Developing, cultivating, and strengthening client relationships.
• Assisting with and leading proposal and cost estimating efforts for environmental and siting projects.
• Regularly interfacing with agencies, clients, and team members.
• Executing project tasks, managing budgets and forecasts, and delivering client satisfaction.
• Demonstrating creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in problem-solving.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualified candidates will have experience with the following regulatory requirements and agencies:

• National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
• State and local environmental and land use permitting
• Energy facility siting and licensing
• U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
• U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
• National Marine Fisheries Service
• U.S. Forest Service
• State wildlife agencies
• Federal and state historic preservation agencies

Qualifications

• B.S. or M.S. in environmental sciences, natural sciences, planning, or related degree from an accredited program. Applicable years of experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
• Minimum 7 years of related consulting experience, including leading technical teams, project management, and business development (7+ years managing engineering or environmental projects preferred).
• Local, regional, and national knowledge and relationships with existing clients are strongly preferred.
• Experience in electricity transmission, oil & gas, renewables, transportation, and similar markets is preferred.
• Demonstrated technical competence and project experience in natural, cultural, or socioeconomic resource fields applicable to industrial siting, licensing, and environmental permitting.
• Ability to deal effectively with industry, government, and public contracts on project-related matters.
• Demonstrated ability to attract and retain clients, build backlog, revenue, profit, direct labor, and return on investment (ROI).
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Working understanding of GIS.
• Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite.
• Experience working with both private and public-sector clients.
• Client relationship development experience is a plus.

Pay

$115,000.00–300,000.00 yearly. The expected compensation range is based on individual education, qualifications, prior work experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
