NDT Inspector-Advanced (CWI)

About the Role

This position reports to the Quality Supervisor or Quality Manager. The NDT Inspector – Advanced will evaluate the assembly of fabricated materials by dimensional checks, visual inspection of welds, and conduct nondestructive testing using ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and liquid penetrant processes. Responsible for coordination of the Quality area to meet production goals, completing daily paperwork, and describing Valmont’s quality system while demonstrating inspection proficiency for customer and third-party auditors. This role emphasizes a commitment to quality, productivity, safety, and environmental policies, fostering teamwork and a productive work environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform nondestructive examination (NDE) on material using methods including visual, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, and ultrasonic testing.
• Evaluate examination results and determine if material meets contract specifications.
• Generate and maintain NDT reports and records for company and contractors.
• Test and evaluate products with absolute integrity to ensure conformance to company and customer specifications.
• Make decisions in the area of codes (including AWS D1.2) and specifications.
• Interpret reports for NDT and pass or reject quality acceptance.
• Actively mentor and train entry and intermediate level NDT Inspectors, welders, and floor staff, including monitoring and documenting OJT progress and developing training programs.
• Perform metallurgical testing including weld coupon testing, positive material identification, and macro examination of weldments.
• Obtain and maintain advanced inspection certifications including AMPP (NACE) CIP or Phased Array UT, if required by Valmont.
• Exercise authority to reject material or stop work in process to minimize financial loss and risk of customer dissatisfaction.
• Work under production conditions with accurate performance and completion of work within set time limits.
• Accountable for essential tools and equipment provided, including maintenance and calibration.
• Actively participate in department safety, demonstrating excellent safety practices and behaviors.
• Maintain timely and consistent attendance.
• Work with the production supervisor to maintain workflow and report issues.

Requirements

• A high awareness for safety at all times.
• High School diploma and 7+ years of work/educational experience, or Associate Degree with 5+ years’ experience, or Bachelor’s Degree.
• 5 years’ experience in fabricated aluminum (preferred) or steel environment.
• Level II NDT certifications or ability to obtain Level II certification within an agreed-upon time by Valmont.
• AWS CWI certification.
• Ability to perform basic mathematic calculations, including conversion of fractions to decimals.
• Ability to use basic measuring tools, such as tape measure, calipers, fillet weld gauges, and levels (digital and conventional) to ensure dimensional accuracy.
• Ability to operate NDT testing equipment.
• Ability to work effectively with plant employees, supervisors, management, and customers.
• Ability to prioritize work to meet deadlines with minimal assistance from leads or supervisors.
• Ability to work timely and expeditiously to deliver on-time results without errors.
• A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10 years’ experience in fabricated aluminum (preferred) or steel environment.
• Associate Degree in NDT from an accredited school.
• SNT-TC-1A NDT Level II in UT, VT, MT, and PT.
• AWS CWI certification.
• Proficiency in basic quality assurance disciplines, including the use of dimensional inspection and gauging equipment.
• AWS certification.
• Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.

Working Environment and Physical Efforts

Work is typically performed in a manufacturing plant environment. The incumbent must be able to move about the office, shipping area, and all areas of the plant producing product lines. The role involves exposure to somewhat disagreeable work conditions such as dust, dirt, heat, fumes, cold, and noise levels above 80 decibels. Work conditions vary throughout the week depending on the assigned plant area, including visits to both indoor and outdoor locations during all seasons.

• Frequent lifting of up to 20 lbs, with occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Regularly required to reach with hands and arms.
• Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, as well as balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Schedule

This is a 2nd shift position with scheduled hours from 2 PM to 12 AM, Monday through Thursday.
