NDI Technician

Airbus Aerosystems Kinston manufactures crucial aircraft components, specializing in the production of large, advanced composite aerostructures for the Airbus A350 XWB, including the composite center fuselage and wing spar.

About the role

As an NDI Technician in our Quality department, you will use non-destructive inspection methods to evaluate materials, components, and systems without causing damage. You will work in a dynamic shop-floor environment surrounded by aviation professionals skilled in electrical, structural, and quality disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Utilize Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) methods (Ultrasonic, UTT, and PE Linear Array) to verify parts comply with customer engineering requirements.
• Set up and standardize NDI equipment, process parts, interpret and evaluate results for acceptance or rejection, and document findings.
• Conduct system performance checks in accordance with applicable process standards.
• Provide guidance and supervision to trainees.
• Perform audit surveillance on non-destructive inspection processes and document non-conformances.
• Operate independently during off-shift work periods (weekends, nights, holidays, etc.).
• Lead Level 1 NDI Technicians with their Level 2 qualifications and certifications.
• Develop in-process techniques and prepare for audits.
• Participate in audit surveillances and engage with Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) events.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 80+ hours of formal classroom training in NDI techniques, including ultrasonic inspection (documentation required).
• 800+ hours of directly related NDI experience (documented).
• 4+ years of NDI experience.
• Ultrasonic Level II certification.
• Ability to work any shift, including 2nd and 3rd shifts.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Ability to articulate complex issues and maintain confidentiality.
• Authorized to work in the U.S.
• 5% domestic/international travel.

• Equipment Operation: Operate office equipment (computers, phones, copiers) and production tools (hydraulic lifts, electronic ID cards).
• Carrying/Lifting: Weekly ability to carry/lift up to 30 lbs/14 kg (documents, tools, equipment).
• Pushing/Pulling: Weekly ability to push/pull small office furniture and tools.
• Sitting/Standing: Daily ability to sit for long periods and stand for discussions.
• Squatting/Kneeling: Weekly ability to squat or kneel for low-shelving access.
• Walking: Daily ability to walk through office and production areas, including uneven surfaces.
• Heights: Ability to work at heights up to 40 ft and operate moving platforms, hydraulic lifts, and forklifts.
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators/masks, and protective gloves as required.
