What You'll Do
- Serve on-site to monitor roadway and structure construction for conformance with plans, contracts, specifications, and codes, providing guidance and recommendations to the project team.
- Cookordinate with agency and contractor personnel and act as a key point of contact for field observations and documentation.
- Oversee project documentation workflows and contribute to monthly reporting and estimates.
- Utilize client electronic project management systems to track and log materials and test results.
- Support training and development of junior inspectors and assist with scheduling coordination as needed.
- Exercise independent judgment within delegated authority while escalating issues appropriately.
Responsibilities
- Provide on-site inspection and quality assurance of roadway and structure construction for conformance with plans, contracts, specifications, and applicable codes.
- Perform required materials testing.
- Perform basic surveying and field measurements to check line, grade, and dimensions and advise the contractor regarding discrepancies.
- Communicate professionally with agency, contractor, and MBP personnel.
- Prepare and maintain project records, including daily diaries documenting locations of work, workforce, equipment, materials, photos, and inspection reports.
- Prepare monthly project estimates and associated sketches, including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations.
- Assist in the oversight, training, and development of a Construction Inspector Trainee.
- Verify that highway work zones and traffic control setups align with current standards.
- Use the client’s electronic project management software to track, document, and log materials and test reports.
- Record or monitor materials received, showing quantities estimated to be required in quantities received, used, and tested.
- Conduct roadway tests; transmit additional samples to the client for verification when required.
- Provide customer service and courteous communication to the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and project stakeholders.
- Complete administrative tasks, including daily timesheets, monthly expense reports, and monthly mileage reports.
- Obtain additional training and certifications as needed and maintain certifications required for assigned inspection duties.
- Support coordination of inspectors’ schedules.
- Recommend rejection of work or payment for completed work as delegated by the Project Owner.
Who We Are Looking For
- Experience: Construction work experience with understanding of construction means and methods; prior inspection experience in the same or similar type of work as the assigned project.
- Education/Knowledge: High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED); OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire; Basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations based on field measurements; Construction-related training and/or coursework in road/bridge construction, civil engineering, project management, or materials, or a combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating ability to perform duties.
- Preferred Certifications: NCDOT Concrete (preferred); QMS Roadway (preferred); Conventional Density (preferred); ABS Sampling (preferred); Borrow Pit Sampling (preferred); Level II Erosion and Sediment Control (preferred).
- Skills and Abilities: Carry out specific inspection assignments and document work progress; Use computers and be proficient with Microsoft Office, email, internet navigation, and web-based tools; Learn client and MBP construction management information systems (e.g., SharePoint, HICAMS, MBP’s OnTrack) within one month of hire; Read and interpret plans and contract specifications for assigned work; Apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments; Communicate inspection issues effectively and responsibly, verbally and in writing, with contractors, owners, sub-consultants, and team members; Use surveying and measurement tools effectively (e.g., survey levels, transits, four-foot levels, lock levels, tapes, measuring wheels, straight edges); Obtain and maintain industry certifications specific to assigned duties; Bend, stoop, kneel, twist, grasp with hands, raise hands above head; stand, sit, climb, and balance; work in confined spaces and at heights with adequate vision; perform tasks up to 12 hours on occasion; Work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions; Safely navigate construction sites with uneven terrain; Maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record; Travel and drive regularly; Work independently with minimal supervision.

Status
The base hourly rate for this position is $30.00 to $45.00. Actual compensation will be determined based on work location, qualifications, experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training.
