About the role

Be a part of the NBCUniversal Internship Program, a paid opportunity for students to unlock their potential by contributing to big projects in meaningful ways. This internship is based in San Jose, CA, within the KNTV Newsroom, a dynamic, major-market newsroom. Interns assist assignment editors, show producers, package producers, writers, editors, and reporters under deadline and across platforms, engaging in a full range of news-gathering activities.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and pitch compelling stories.
  • Follow up on story leads and support fact-checking and story development.
  • Find visual news elements and secure clearances.
  • Identify story sources and experts, and pre-interview subjects.
  • Log breaking news events.
  • Assist in all aspects of news gathering, including nights and/or weekends.
  • Work within specific areas of placement such as the Assignment Desk and General Newsroom.

Requirements

  • Must be actively enrolled in a degree-granting program at an accredited institution during the entire duration of the program (Juniors or above).
  • Must be presently authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring work visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must be available to work 20 hours per week from September 21 – December 18, 2026, in San Jose, CA.
  • Must be willing to work nights and/or weekends as required by the newsroom.
  • Candidates on student or exchange visas (e.g., F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, J-1, M-1) are not eligible unless they can adjust to a status granting work authorization without NBCUniversal sponsorship.
  • Must have an active Social Security number and complete the I-9 form within 3 days of hire.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in news, journalism, and/or media.
  • Strong writing, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Academic background in Broadcast Journalism, Journalism, English, Communications, Media Studies, Political Science, or related fields preferred.
  • Experience working with a campus TV station, newspaper, or website.
  • Comfortable with shooting and editing on a cellphone as well as desktop editing.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.
  • Fluent in the news of the day and the Bay Area news market (e.g., local politics, sports, culture).
  • Ability to condense and prioritize information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to take on new projects.
  • Eye for unique and community-based stories.
  • Comfortable communicating with viewers, subject matter experts, and local government agencies.
  • Fluency with various social media platforms.
  • Ability to shoot and edit social media videos.

Schedule

Fall 2026 Internship Program runs from September 21 – December 18, 2026, with a time commitment of 20 hours per week. Exact schedule to be determined based on business need and may include nights and/or weekends.
