Naturalist I- Department of Recreation & Parks
Job Summary
A Naturalist manages the maintenance and preservation of Municipal nature trails and wildlife reserves. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional work week that may involve evening and weekend work. Work is performed in Municipal nature trails, parks, and wildlife preserves where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, poisonous plants and insects, and difficult terrain may be encountered. Work requires moderate physical exertion when hiking, moving large plants and logs, and trapping animals.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with courses in the biological or environmental sciences. AND Experience: N/A. OR Equivalency Notes: - Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and three years of experience in wildlife or nature preservation work may be substituted for the education requirement.
- Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the care of plants, trees and shrubs in a natural environment.
- Knowledge of the local flora and fauna species, both common and rare or endangered.
- Knowledge of local climate, weather patterns, geography, and geology.
- Skill in identifying rare or endangered flora and fauna species.
- Ability to speak effectively.
- Ability to stimulate the interest of others in natural history and natural science.
- Ability to teach and lead others in the performance of their work.
Background Check
Background Check Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
Probation
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.
Eligibility
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months.
Training & Experience
The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity.
Selection Process
All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination.
Examination Process
Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment. Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months. The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position.
