About the Role
This position involves participating in the development and implementation of natural resource management plans, enforcing regulations, and conducting public outreach for conservation and preservation efforts.
Responsibilities
- Participates in the development of planning documents including Master Plans and Operational Management Plans (OMP) for natural resource management.
- Engages in conservation, preservation, restoration, and use of project natural and cultural resources.
- Enforces Title 36 CFR by educating the visiting public on project purposes, conditions, policies, and regulations.
- Conducts public relations services for the general public and special groups.
- Ensures strict enforcement of safe practices and safety/security regulations.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, including a completed background investigation.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 44 lbs., traverse rough or uneven terrain, walk and stand for extended periods, and work in adverse weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind).
- Exposure to hazards including drowning in swift-moving water, insect and snake bites, pesticides, herbicides, and raw sewage.
- Must obtain a valid CPR certificate and "Responding to Emergencies" (or equivalent) certificate within 6 months of hire.
- Ability to withstand extreme stress during life-threatening situations.
- Ability to work nights and/or weekends as needed, with occasional overnight travel (approximately 10%) for training, conferences, and rotational assignments.
- Must possess or have the ability to acquire a state driver's license and a Corps of Engineers boat operator's license.
- Must meet Park Ranger training requirements as identified in the Career Development Guide for Civil Works Natural Resources Management Team Members.
- Must wear a prescribed uniform and appropriate safety gear as required.
Qualifications
Open to US citizens. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations.
Basic Requirement for Natural Resources Specialist (Ranger):
- Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines.
- OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in the above fields, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Specialized Experience:
- GS-07: One year of specialized experience including:
- Applying knowledge of natural resource management to carry out duties.
- Participating in recreational and natural resource management activities.
- GS-09: One year of specialized experience including:
- Applying knowledge of natural resource management to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
- Providing recommendations for planning and implementing environmental, recreational, and natural resource management activities.
Combination of education and experience may also qualify. Foreign education must be evaluated by a private organization for equivalency to US education programs.
