About the role

This position offers two levels within the Gas Trader classification hierarchy:

  • Gas Trader (Level 2): Solves complex problems in Natural Gas areas with general supervision. Develops advanced skills and works with greater independence, applying fundamental concepts to varied and fairly complex work.
  • Senior Gas Trader (Level 3): Manages work in Natural Gas areas with minimal supervision. Fully competent in concepts and procedures, identifies problems, develops solutions, and resolves issues independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute daily and short-term gas trading activities to meet the gas needs of the generation fleet and generate customer savings.
  • Assist with the execution of approved financial hedging strategies.
  • Provide backup, nighttime, and weekend coverage.
  • Assist in preparation of regulatory responses and support for various audit activities.
  • Develop gas, credit, and risk processes and procedures.
  • Manage and optimize daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual supply and transportation needs by interacting with suppliers and pipelines to procure physical natural gas and transportation.
  • Lead and execute hedging programs using various financial instruments.
  • Identify potential new supply and transportation opportunities that economically support the fleet.
  • Identify fuel savings opportunities.
  • Support short- and long-term gas supply and transportation procurement.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for regulatory fuel recovery clause proceedings.
  • Provide direct support for various audit activities.
  • Develop and implement daily and monthly physical setup strategies for gas requirements for each entity.

Requirements

  • Gas Trader:
    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • Five (5) years of related work experience in addition to the required degree.
  • Senior Gas Trader:
    • Bachelor’s degree.
    • Eight (8) years of related work experience in addition to the required degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience hedging with swaps and other financial products.
  • Experience with physical gas procurement.
  • Strong business analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in computer software and hardware for data manipulation, analysis, and presentation.
  • Experience trading and moving natural gas on various interstate gas pipeline systems.
  • Interpersonal skills and systematic thinking to identify, clarify, and solve business problems.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
  • Fast-paced environment with hard deadlines.
  • Must be available for weekends and nights.
  • Travel requirements: 5-15%.
